Torque vs unreal

As have said before Im a total newb to game design. Im currently stocking up on books and programs to take on a very extended "vacation" with plans of delving in and learning all I can.
No matter what, I think from what Ive read and especially because the community here that torque will be the best resource on my learning quest. I will definatly be buying TGE/TSE to take with me. I am curious though...
After seeing some the things done by unreal modders, not jus map mods but actual new games made from the free unreal editor (well free if buy the game lol.) Im trying to decide if its worth buying a game wouldnt play just to get the editor along with a couple books on unreal.
Graphics wise it seams really nice, but what about other capabilities? What kind learning curve am I looking at? Can it really be used to make just about any type of game? (Im speaking from the editor, I know the sourcecode was used to make Linege 2 but who has a few 100k to throw around lol.)
Basically Im just wondering how torque and unreal(editor) compare.
Thanks :)

As for what games the engines can produce. Why don't you look at the original Tribes and Tribes Vengence. I think it's pretty apparent what Torque and Unreal can do by seeing the same game concept done with each engine. Tribes Vengence wasn't nearly the game it's prequels were ... and in large part it was because the maps were a lot smaller and I don't think it's networking abilities were as good. Torque can give you more players and larger landscapes than Unreal.
Mostly though ... it's about the fact that with Torque you are making your own game and you get all the source code. With Unreal ... you're just making a mod ... even if it's a total conversion you still can't sell your game.
