Forum Etiquette?

by Anthony Fullmer · in General Discussion · 08/18/2005 (10:44 pm) · 25 replies

When I was referred to Garage Games, I was told that there was a posting laying out the etiquette of the forums. In my desire to not offend anyone, either intentionally or not, I searched this posting out, but found nothing. So, I have come to one of two conclusions:

1. No such posting exists

2. I am incapable of finding it

So, if anyone could nudge me in the right direction, or at least dispel the myth, I would sincerely appreciate it =D

Basically from my experience here, avoid cross posting, avoid posting a new thread asking about something that has been answered about 17 million times and avoid resurrecting 3 year old threads. Some also get annoyed by really bad spelling and grammar but you have no problem there.

Other than that, you'll see here that this is a great community and people go out of there way to help each other. Welcome :)

I think a good rule of thumb is, if you have a question, search for it first. The search function is stellar. 99 times out of 100 you'll be able to find the information you're looking for.

Interestingly, this is one of the projects I am working on right now!

For reference, the "posts" being referred to are actually a couple of .plans made back in the fall/winter of 2004. I'll be referencing them in our "Forum Decorum" page once it's complete.

In general, this biggest thing to think about when posting here at GG is that this is a professional forum of product purchasers/users, and not your everyday "flame to win" forums that exist in so many places on the net. We ask that you treat everyone with respect--not just in your posting itself, but also that you take into consideration the effort and time taken to read, and then (hopefully) answer questions. In this particular situation, it is always best to:

1) First search on your question. In the last 5-ish years, it's almost certainly been asked and answered (although not always!).
2) Do some background work. Posters here aren't going to be able to teach you design principles, programming techniques, but we can help answer questions if you understand the basics.
3) State your question well. Give good information about:

A) What you are trying to accomplish.
B) What you've tried so far.
C) What is your specific error, console.log problem, or a detailed description of what you see (screenshots can be good!).

As an example (hypothetical) of a post that just about certainly isn't going to get any responses whatsoever (and unfortunately, one that we see just about daily):

Haha thanks Matt, dude, I seriously searched that thing for 20 minutes, I looked for:

Posting Rules, Forum Rules, Posting Etiquette, Forum Etiquette, Garage Games Etiquette, etc...everything I could think of. You must have them hidden away somewhere ;)

Posting in a natural way is fine, but an overabundance of net speak (I kno u r teh sux!) is a big petpieve of mine. It's a forum... not a chat.

I can see your point, especially since this is supposed to be a professional(though fun) environment. If someone cannot be understood in their questions, I suppose it would not be the community's fault when no help was given.

Stuff like "I kno u r teh sux!" probably wouldn't be tolerated in the GG chat, either. :)
