Showcase your games

by Gary Roberson · in General Discussion · 08/05/2005 (10:02 am) · 17 replies

Hi guys,

I'm about ready to purchase Torque within a couple of weeks. I already have Blitz3d and am using that to produce my "Asian Pounder" series of games, and other simpler 3d games.

I'm thinking of using Torque for more complex gaming concepts.

I'm on the lookout for anyone who has completed or nearly completed an 'RPG' style game using Torque. Don't mention any of those I can finid in the Torque store, "Minions of Mirth", "Tribes", or "Tribes 2". I already know about those, and I own copies of Tribes and Starsiege Tribes from the CGW cover discs.

I'm looking for games that I don't know about!

Unless you are targeting the xxx crowd, i would strongly suggest changing your game's title.

"Asian Pounder" .... LoL

I'm quite afraid to google that game title at work.
It is an easy one to remember though.

No Jason,

I'm not targeting the xxx crowd, not with this game!

But that does bring up an interesting question!

Would you publish a game titled "Deep Throat", or "The Devil and Miss Jones" ?

Well, i think any name with a unique and catchy title is a good name...

the problem with "Asian Pounder" is that it is not unique..

If you do a web search for "Asian Pounder" you get all sorts of 'adult orriented' content returned. So there are a few problems with the name:

1) It suggests adult-themed content (not good if you want a parrent to buy the game for the kiddies)

2) You will be competing with a well-saturated name. It is much better to find a unique name so that when someone searches (via google et. all) they only are returned your content, not 1000 pages of XXX Porn, with your result burried somewhere on page 592.

What kind of game, if not XXX, would "Asian Pounder" be? I'm trying to envision a game with that name, and all I see is either porn or a very politically incorrect street brawl :)

Not meant to harass you (well, maybe a little bit), just trying to imagine what type of game this could be... you've got me curious!

Edit:

------------------------------------------------
Asian Pounder ( a 3dRPG about a Japanese-female monster hunter in an apocaleptic future, hopefully to be a seires of games if sales goes well. Developed using Blitz Basic (65% mostly done, the character types, the basic game engine that loads the game levels, buildings, and moves an player from area to area.) Expected delivery December 2006.
-----------------------------------------------

Yeah, the name Asian Pounder just doesn't scream post-apocalyptic monster hunter to me...

Just my 22 cents (because two isn't enough)

Awww, come on guys, don't be so critical.

Don't get the impression that your comments are falling on deaf ears, or a stubborn hard-headed bitch. I do take them them seriously.

Asian Pounder is intended to be the name of the main charater, which brings up a clever solution to the problem we're having. In many James Bond movies, his name is never used in the titles. I could use the same technique for the pounder series. BTW, what images do you conjure up when you think of Octopussy, or Miss MoneyPenny.

Oh, and yes Jason, I did get the name from an adult site, and I liked the sound of it, and since it wasn't copyrighted, I thought I use it for some of my games.

@ David,

Did Deep Throat actually come out for the Atari 2600. If you know more about this game, I would like to hear it. What was the game about?
BTW, Deep Throat was also used as one of the names for a character in the X-Files tv series with David Duchovy. And it was also used for the informant that gave up information to the two reporters about the Watergate break-in.

Now bak to the original purpose for this thread.
Does anyone have any game that they want to showcase, or know of one?

@Amanda:

Well i dont know if you consider my comments "critical" but without knowing the premise behind your game that's the best I could do.

As for Deep Throat, it was the name of a porn movie, and the alias was used afterwards..

As for "Octopussy" or "MoneyPenny"... those remind me of "James Bond" movies actually, though they are lewd and suggestive. (not sure about moneypenny tho)

What my comments/concerns are focused around are purely marketing based.

unless you can secure asianpounder.com, you will have a very tough time getting your main character's name up on a search engine.

Also, in general, dont expect the teen audience to be able to get their parrents to buy the game for them (sometimes yes, but sometimes no)

If you are specifically targeting the "sexy super secret agent" stuff then it's a fine name, i'd just suggest something slightly more statistically unique, even changing the name to "Japanese Pounder" really, really really helps your uniqueness. "Japanese Pounder" is just an example, i can see a marketing concern with that too, if you want your character to be "asian" and not nessicarily "japanese".. but you get the picture.

Anyway, best of luck. I'll make a game one of these days too :)

Deep Throat was also the cyborg ninja in Metal Gear Solid for PS1. Asian Pounder. A game about a female Japanese monster hunter set in the future. I don't understand why the characters race is such a big deal that it has to be in the title of the game. So had the main character been a white female monster hunter set in the future would the game had been called European Pounder or would you have just called it Pounder or something different? Let me guess, your Japanese characters name is Jade right? Right... Well I'm gonna go play Super Asian Fighter II Turbo. Who here is looking forward to Asian Fantasy XII for PS2? Zone of the Asians by Konami was an excelent game. Did you guys know Snake is half white and half Japanese in Metal Gear Asian? Do you guys see my point or am I wrong? And what is she pounding and what is she pounding it with?

@Amanda

Mindless sensationalism is what got rockstar where they are today i.e. under federal investigation and pretty much fire fighting to save their company. If they annoy the wrong people at this stage of the fire fighting, they face at worse a total recall of all GTA:SA sold to date!

If you are hoping to use controvertial content and titles to sell your game then be prepared for the consequences. It's getting to the stage where this isn't acceptible by parents anymore.

I should add that here in england "Asian Pounder" as a title would be considered racist and in very poor taste especially after the suicide bombings. As a result I am finding all of this highly un-amusing to say the least. I really do hope you aren't serious about this title etc.

@Peter, why is it racist? Maybe your english definition of "Pounder" is different than it is here.

I am guessing that you mean "Someone who beats up asians" which, while it loosely can be defined as that here in the USA, isnt really what people would think of by the title. (Maybe because here we dont use the word "Pounder" much)

No guys,

Asian Pounder is not the title of a game, just as James Bond is not the title of a movie, and Sherlock Holmes is not the title of a book.

Asian Pounder is a name I chose to be the name of a female character in a series of games, and a reference to a planned series of games. the tieltes will be different when I choose them.

My only problem, since I [bold]indeed did[\bold] get this name from an adult site, and as Jason points out, it is not unique, and brings up images of sexually explicit content, I will have that hurdle to fight.

At least, when Conan Doyle created Sherlock Holmes and ?? (does anyone know who created James Bond) created 007, the names wer unique, and now today, we do think of a master detective, and super british spy when we hear those names.

@Jason

Yes, I knew that Deep Throat was the name of a movie. How many movies have you seen made into a game. (SpiderMan 2, the Hulk, James Bond, etc., etc.) BTW, if case you didn't know it, Michael Ninn's Shock (a XXX title) is not only a movie and game, but the soundtrack is sold on normal cd's.

@Ajari

Why did I choose Japanese. I myself am a black American, and on my day job, I work in a culturally diverse workforce (black, Mexican, White, Japanese, American Indian, Chinese, Phillipino) I did not choose Japanese to make a racist statement, or because blacks and whites don't make good leading characters. There are some things about Japanese culture that I like, and chose these elements for my game.

@Peter

How is it racist? When I chose the name, I had no intent to hurt anyone, or belittle anyone. I chose the name, because I liked the sound of it. Of course, being that I am American, I may be ignorant of some of the finer implications that name brings up.

I welcome all comments!!!

I don't have a problem with the fact that you chose a Japanese character to be your main character. I saw a problem when I thought "Asian Pounder" was the name of the whole story. The name of the whole game like "Street Fighter". But for some reason Asian Pounder being the name of the character doesn't bother me as much. It kind of like Black Momba from Kill Bill. It could be a nickname given by survivors or witneses of her victums. It's hard to explain why I feel this way but I can elaborate further later. I'm a little in a rush. The name still sounds stupid to me but so does Solid Snake. So go with it. It'll grow on people if you don't get in trouble with possible porn issues first.

Edit: The description of your co-workers you made sounded like you are from southern California. I'm from San Diego myself.
