Synapse lighting

by Alex Huck · in Torque Game Engine Advanced · 07/24/2005 (3:16 pm) · 16 replies

Hi all, just a quick question.

Does the synapse lighting pack do anything to the Torque Shader Engine? Milestone 4 says it'll revamp Dynamic Lighting and Dynamic shadows, when they say that, do they mean basically to integrate the synapse lighting pack into the shader engine? Or just redo the way it handles shadows, though not the same way as Synapse?

The lighting pack won't work with TSE, iirc synapse is working (or soon to be) on a lighting pack for TSE.

Just don't quote me on that... hopefuly John will post more info.

Hi guys,

The Lighting Pack will definitely be a separate product. The Lighting Pack focuses on streamlining content creation and creating visually dynamic environments - it provides tools for quickly and efficiently creating, rigging, and modifying your game's lighting from the comfort of the mission editor. The Lighting Pack also provides tools for rapid prototyping, cinematic lighting, and even allows you to create your own unique lighting styles (so you can take advantage of the Lighting Pack's tools and still have completely unique lighting in your game).

The Lighting Pack for TGE actually uses parts of TGE's dynamic lighting and shadows, but these are significantly modified to provide all of the cool effects you've seen in the demo and in games using the Lighting Pack. TSE's dynamic lights and shadows will provide the same foundation for the Lighting Pack for TSE, so I'm looking forward to that milestone too. I already have working dynamic lighting in an internal version of the Lighting Pack for TSE, but I'm excited to see what new toys will be available in TSE that I can build upon.

Let me know if this helps!

Wonderful news John :) I always get excited when you talk about the lightingpack. I honestly can't see myself working with interiors, without this wonderful tool in TSE. Ever - it makes such a huuuuge difference, not only in visual looks.. IMO the most spectacular part is that you do it on the fly and you can see the results immediatly on the screen!

Sorry, got a bit carried away. :)

If you could tell us...

Will the TSE lighting pack be more expensive, less expensive, or cost the same as the TGE lighting pack?

The lighting pak would make tse rock... based on the short vid that was making the rounds a while ago...

Hi guys,

It'll be a while, unfortunately that's all I can say right now (other than the Torque Lighting Kit rocks! :).

"The lighting pak would make tse rock"

No it wouldn't! It's hard to make something rock thats already rocking... it would however significantly increase the volume :P

Dynamic Lighting is on the plate for milestone 4 according to the TSE roadmap.

J Rose... if you saw what's in store... you'd realize that while it's definitely on the stage, it aint rockin' just yet...

... but it will be :)

Read Brian Ramage's latest plan (Edit: No. Not the latest, the one before..). He says they've done a big portion already. And when Ben is back from 1.4 dev, I suspect the terrain will start moving again.

I don't know man... its pretty rockin', especially with those extremely awesome looking water reflections and atlas. Of course... I also though TGE rocked, but I guess rockin' is a comparative attribute.

Rockin applies to just about everything GG works on :) As well as those like John who make rockin addons and extensions to Torque.

Is it possible to buy the code that was produced/used in the tse tech demo ?
