Other Engines...

I noticed once that on the Garage Games description thingy it says that they're looking into having other engines. What have you guys at GG been looking at so far, if anything?

The marble demo and the camera demo had texture rendering issues that I plan to track down on the forums since I seem to remember a couple of topics about them. It works fine on my 9800, so I'm thinking that I need to check the materials and see what kind of nifty shaders are being used.
The particles are pretty nice, and as a one-click solution, it's pretty solid. I still prefer Unity for interface and flexibility, but I definitely won't fault BV for the intended audience. Because of their intended audience, the documentation will be a major project. The included demos are good examples to get people started.
I'm really thinking that I should put together a basic how-to/strength-weakness comparison for different engines using a simple level. It's not like I'm doing anything else with my quickly-amassing engine collection.

Well, I had a little chance to play with BV last night (I can't keep my hands off a new engine). Even though it is in beta state, the scene culling needs some serious work (something I noticed in Steer Madness as well). There is significantly huge slow-down when coming into detailed areas. It is especially noticable when in the racing demo (or in the buggy in the FPS demo) when rolling around the track. There is a point where you get to a huge base...and when you are facing the mountain it runs extremely fast, but when the building is in your view, it slows to an obscene crawl. The terrain rendering chunks up horribly if it intersects with a model (see the dam). It worked much better on my desktop PC with a 9800, but still, I was a bit disheartened. The marble demo and the camera demo had texture rendering issues that I plan to track down on the forums since I seem to remember a couple of topics about them. In BV There is a couple of ways to do culling in the code maybe it will be more clearer when the documentation is done. Apparantly Steer Madness is the old code ( they didnt use AngelCode with it ) although they did use the BV engine.

Hey David, Thats an awesome idea. I also had texture rendering issues on my Laptop. 64 MB intel so its understandable, but I had no issues at all on my 6600GT.In BV There is a couple of ways to do culling in the code maybe it will be more clearer when the documentation is done. Who cares about paying GarageGames $495 when you've made $250 000 anyway?
