Confusion with exporting
by D B · in Artist Corner · 07/17/2005 (2:30 pm) · 35 replies
Hi, I've tried to export a model I made, but I keep getting an error saying "No meshes to export".
Also, I'm not too sure how to set up collision and bounding, either; can anybody help me here?
Thanks.

Look down at the second post and you'll see Matt Summers (the exporters author) has posted a link or two to some scene examples ready for exporting. This should help you out.www.garagegames.com/mg/forums/result.thread.php?qt=23599

I'll check the post there.
Thanks.

I have read the documentation for the exporter, but I haven't been able to determine the problem.I'll check the post there.
Thanks.

I'd have to see the file to help you more or if you can post your shape scene hierarchy.

I think I may be doing something wrong; it's also done it with the completed help files.

Even the simple shape example won't export? strange.

I'm thinking that maybe it's something I'm not doing, rather than the files... at least the files helped me to realize THAT much. =P

Sounds like your hierarchy isn't set up right. Be sure everything is linked correctly, and your mesh name has a number following it (such as MyMesh32), and you have a detail marker/dummy in the scene with the same number (ie detail32). Not familiar with gamespace and how it handles heirarchy, but that error is usually from not having your scene set up right.

Well, the problem is, is that it also had the same problem for the files that were ready to be exported to DTS, as well; so I don't think it is a hierarchy problem. I think it's something else that's the problem, but I'm not sure what.

Oh, btw, what type of model are you trying to produce, a 'skinned' mesh with skeletal rig[weighted vertices by mulitple 'bones'], or a 'rigid' shape[no vertex weighting].
gS has some strange ideas about hierarchy and grouping...probably where it's all bogged down. Sounds like the shape portion of the object is out of whack, or no detail markers to direct towards the geometry....
...step by step listing of the actions taken might prove helpful.

Try this and see if it helps with how get a shape going from gS to DTS...all the good stuf is there. Enjoy! I even include a skeletal RIG! Based upon Buzz3d.coms ELF tutorial.Oh, btw, what type of model are you trying to produce, a 'skinned' mesh with skeletal rig[weighted vertices by mulitple 'bones'], or a 'rigid' shape[no vertex weighting].

I believe it is a skinned mesh with a skeletal rig (I have a mesh with a skeleton in it). I'm not too sure what exactly the second example would be; is it just basically an object consisting of no bones? Do you have an example of the rigid shape?
I have looked over the link you gave me, but I couldn't really find the solution to the problem. Even Matt Summers' help files (which Eric Johnson linked to) had the same problem as mentioned above ("No meshes to export"), even though it was supposed to be all ready to export.
All I've pretty much done was click on the DTS exporter plugin in gameSpace, I say I want to export the DTS, but when I click Save, it brings up the "no meshes" error.
Thanks again.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

There is the default Caligari Corp. version which is available probably within the Save As...dialog. I have never used that version. From the few posts I've read about it's results, I never will.
There is another DTS exporter, written by Matt Summers. It's very good, has a few quirks, but functions. That exporter has to be brought to the desktop by opening it's .TSX file via the PlugIn menu icon.
Beyond that; I couldn't really begin to speculate on why it's not working....you'll probably have to provide some screenshots of what your hierarchy looks like and give a very precise step by step process you're following....sorry, that's the best I can do.

Only thing I can think, Danny, is that there are 2 DTS exporters for GameSpace, and you're using the wrong one???There is the default Caligari Corp. version which is available probably within the Save As...dialog. I must have been really tired, because I thought I already had version 2.0. >.<
I'll give the version 2.0 a shot.
Thanks again, Rex.

I suppose it must be it; even though it was mentioned in the first link that not having version 2.0 may be a problem (I just checked and I have version 1.0).I must have been really tired, because I thought I already had version 2.0. >.<
I'll give the version 2.0 a shot.
Thanks again, Rex.

Even after normalizing everything to where I want it, my mesh and my skeleton still won't be in the same location when I export it to ShowTool. The skeleton will be in the place it is supposed to be (along with all of the nodes), but the mesh will be in a different location! I have no idea why this problem keeps arising. Has anyone ever had a problem like this before? What are some possibilities as to what I'm doing wrong? Is there anything that I shouldn't do when attaching a mesh to a skeleton?
Sorry that this sounds so desparate, but I haven't been able to successfully export anything to ShowTool as of yet.

Argh. It seems the DTS exporter isn't the only tool causing problems for me; the mapExporter in gameSpace is causing problems, as well. The mapExporter will not export a simple cube map for some reason. Is there any way around this? Or would I be better off using something like QuArK?

I had trouble with the map exporter in gS also. After some frustration, I tried QuArK, got a bit more frustrated and finally bought Cartography Shop (and Tom Spilman's .DIF exporter). The CS/exporter combo does the trick for me and has prevented a lot of extra headaches.

Also, have you ever had (or heard of) the problem in my first question, where the mesh and the skeleton keep seeming to separate upon exporting?

I'll keep the Cartography Shop in mind, Aaron. Do you mind if I ask what problems in particular QuArK has caused (just curious as to what to look out for)?
