by Cy · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 07/07/2005 (5:37 pm) · 18 replies

For two or so months I have been working with a small group of people that have some great ideas for game development. The only thing is that we need more man power to get some of our projects done. If you live close to Kansas City Kansas and are looking for a group of dedicated people to work along side with please post here on the forums so that I might be able to contact you through your public e-mail. (I live in Overland Park)

I'm in Kansas and interested in learning more about your group. Saddly, the email address above bounced back with a "mailbox unavailable" error. Please email me at g0ad@yahoo.com as I would like to learn more about your group and goals.
    Thanks

I had no idea there were this many!

    Hmmm....

I also saw this waaaay too late.

I would at least be interested in the networking opportunity.

Too bad I missed it. =(

I've recently returned to Kansas City (living in Shawnee) after a long exile in middle Nebraska where there was NOTHING going on in game development (other than me, of course), and I was really hoping to find some other developers in the area. I haven't had much luck, but then I spotted this thread. It's great to see some other indie developers in the area, and I'd love to chat with any of you. I missed the get-together, obviously, but I'd love to hear what you guys (and gals, perhaps?) have cooking.

My email is jpritch@eisonline.com. Drop me a line and let me know what's up. If it's something I could contribute to, I can make some time for a project or two.

Perhaps, if there's enough interest, we should try to reschedule some kind of informal gathering - not necessarily to discuss development on a *particular* project, but more as a networking opportunity.

I know I've got enough on my own plate right now without trying to get involved in another project - but you never know what types of mutually profitable relationships can evolve from such things.

I'm willing to bet there's more than one developer who'd relish the opportunity to make connections with other developers who have different areas of expertise...

@Kirby: No kidding. My ultimate goal would be to see a small indie game company formed in KC, and networking with other developers in the area is the best way to see something like that happen.

While I can't commit to anything right now, I'd be interested in working towards this, if the game(s) and people involved were complimentary.

Wish I was still in Kansas, but KC was quite a drive for me anyway...

Joseph: If by commiting you mean to project development - I'm in the same boat.

On the other hand, finding people who are geographically close to me to contract or trade art<->code and that type of thing is what I'd ultimately be after.

As far as I'm concerned, the projects don't have to be complimentary to help each other out - as long as the people are. (C:

John - that is precisely my goal, although geographic proximity has never been a requisite in my mind, but it would certainly be convenient. ;-)

This is why I suggested a "no agenda" informal get-together. it never hurts to make new contacts who share your itnerests. Between us (all), I'd wager that there's a gold-mine of talent and knowledge that's not being fully tapped into.

Edit: Not sure why it reposted this just now, but it was unintentional.
Anyway, all I meant by complimentary projects is that my artistic abilities are only good in certain situations, which are actually pretty limited.

    I know what you mean.

I myself am actually a much better GUI/ HUD artist than anything else IMO.

Of course, you just never know when the particular skill-set you possess is exactly what somone else might desperatley need.

If half the people on that list are still in the KC area and involved in game-dev, then we definitely need to get our own little network going.

Incidentally, I was visiting my father-in-law last night in OP. I'd bet I was but 10 minutes away from you at any given point.

I'm in Ottawa, KS right now, but by Monday I'll be living near Leawood.
There does seem to be quite a few of us KS/MO people interested in making games.
For my part, my experiance is pretty shotty. I've done a little bit of graphics work for two free projects, one of which died around alpha and one that died before that.

Looks like I'm surrounded by artists ;) If any of you have some samples of your work online, I'd love to take a look. I love the artistic side of games, as well as fiction (I see we share this interest, as well as an interest in comics, Josh), but I excel more as a programmer and designer than an artist. The grass is always greener, you know? I want most to do those things for which I have the least talent. If I could do anything, I'd be doing 3D models.

Is anyone here involved in a game project? Anything that you hope to publish?

I'm currently working on a T2D game I hope to get published with GG. We'll have to see how that goes. I'm also planning a project with a group of Torque developers from Canada, a new version of an old game called Trade Wars, that we hope to start in 2006. If any of you are interested in doing some art for that project, there might be an opportunity. It would be great to work with someone nearby. Canada is a LONG way away ;)

"that is precisely my goal, although geographic proximity has never been a requisite in my mind, but it would certainly be convenient"

@Kirby: Having worked both on-site and remote for various projects, I just feel that there so much more energy when people can get together. The net is an awesome tool, but there's still nothing like working side by side.

Oh, one more question. Does anyone here have experience with Flash and/or backend web design? That's my biggest weakness right now, and the thing I most need from a collaborator.

Wow, I haven't been on this post for awhile. It is nice to see more people from Kansas on here. I knew I wasn't the only one. I didn't make that meeting, because I live just outside of Wichita.

Wow, if anyone wants to visit my web forum, I've put a special spot on the bottom of the forum just for us kansas developers.

I love games and have always wanted to make one. In fact I just made my first set of 2D graphics and sent them to my programmer. So I'm hoping to have my first game in a few weeks. :) I don't look at myself as an artist. I have no real clue to how to do anything. And I don't see myself as a programmer, because I just picked up my first C book, but I do see myself as a designer, so I must know and be able to do some of both. So theres a little on me.

Nothing I'd wager, or I'd like to think I'd have heard something about it by now.

I still think the "rest of us" should organize some kind of informal meeting for networking purposes.

As I said before, just the ability to get to know like-minded indie's around here would be worth the time in my opinion.

Maybe I'll just have a stab at such a gathering. Hmmmm...

I'd be intereseted in that. Though I don't know how much I'd really have to offer in such a venue, it would be fun.
