Video Tutorial showing how to use exporter
by Nigel Hungerford-Symes · in Artist Corner · 07/01/2005 (11:22 pm) · 18 replies
I've whacked together a quick video showing how to get stuff out of Blender into Torque.
It is ONLY THE VERY BASICS of exporting. There are more advanced topics but this wasn't the point of this video tutorial.
www.users.on.net/~symes/other/ExportingDTS.avi
It is 21 megs.
It uses the Xvid Codec so you might need to download it if you don't have it already. Google is your friend here.
EDIT: download.divxmovies.com/XviD-1.0.3-20122004.exe for the correct codec
If you can host it as well please contact me, I'll be most thankful. I'll probably set up a torrent later tonight too but I'm on ADSL so my upstream bandwidth isn't great.
Positive and constructive critisism is welcomed. Any negative critisism will be met with distain and a return email questioning your lineage :)
Disclaimer associated with it:
Do not download it if.......
* You don't like Australian accents.
* You haven't ever made one but think you can do better and that this gives you the right to pour sh!t on everyone else who tries.

Thanks.
I'm thinking that since I learnt how to use VirtualDubMod properly to create that tutorial, I'll now use that skill to create lots more little blender tuts. (Requests anyone?)
I love Blender and think the only thing stopping more people using it is the learning curve. Hopefully I can allevate that)
As for the disclaimers, I don't know, maybe it is just living in Australia were tall poppy syndrome seems to be rife ;) I just hate when people criticise other's efforts without putting forward their own first (so they can be criticised too)
This does relate to a previous video tutorial effort for another engine a couple of years ago :)

One minor thing - the radar_part1 info on how to link the radar to the armitage (bone) didnt work like you explained - basically when I select the armitage in pose mode and then rotate it (in top view say) then the radar doesnt rotate with it - it does rotate with the armitage if I select it in object mode - seems to be due to a difference in blender versions - am using 2.40 - will check the current blender docs to see how it should work in this version (but if you know already, Id appreciate the tip!).
Again - fabulous work!! Any more videos in the pipeline ?

Excellent videos! Just what I was looking for. I was about to give up on blender for exporting to dts format til I saw this! The best you can do in TGE right now is getting the lighting Kit, it does a very good job faking bump effects.

TGE currently does not support bump and normal maps. But TSE does :)The best you can do in TGE right now is getting the lighting Kit, it does a very good job faking bump effects.

When i first ran into your videos ( from another thread about exporting dts ) i thought "great , i need to download 20MB just to see some cheesy video" ... but after watching that one , i'm now grabing all of them .. i think i have learned more in the time it took to watch 1 video , than i have in the last 10 or so tutorials i have read thanks , i know making these isn't easy , but they are very helpfull.

I just want to say a big "thank you", also. These tutorials are wonderful resources for learning more about both Torque and Blender.

I've been a little short of time lately and have run into a few technical issues making new ones involving other software but I hope in a few weeks time I'll start getting a few more up.....or at least update the current ones to the latest version of Blender and the exporter.

The Animated Static Shapes tutorial has shown me how to parent from mesh to bone then from bone to Detail32. Although this is only a little information about parenting, I had banged my head many times to get this information. I had sucessfully exported a Shape with two different animations as DSQ files. They work thanks to you.
I suggest you consider updating your tutorials with version numbers indicating to what blender version it was applied to.
Thank you. I like the royality accent. Keep up the qreat work.

Lol - thanks :D I think you'll find it is actually me just trying to be as clear as possible.
I am a criminal lawyer IRL and hopefully soon to be a Barrister. Hopefully my "royality[sic] accent" will be as effective in Court :D
BTW I saw a request for a door tutorial in another thread - I think that is a great idea. I'm pretty sure a couple of tutorials on making a door should be "doable". It won't be in the next few weeks but hopefully sometime soon after that - end of July/early August.

I've watched several other video tutorials, and I've had to pause, rewind, and then bang my head on the desk while I try and figure out which button they pressed to do what they just showed on the screen. Not to say I didn't have to pause yours, but that was usually while I tried to follow along.
Keep up the great work, and I can't wait to watch the next video. It's a great way for visual learners to stay on top of things. Down with text! heh

Great job Nigel. I've watched this tutorial probably over a dozen times now, and I still laugh when you bring up the 'masterful work of art' (test.png). You give clear precise instructions and I especially like how you verbally state every step you do. If you click the middle mouse to move a menu, you say "click the middle mouse button and drag the menu so you can see it". It helps some of us novices pick up the process, and through repetition it helps us remember it and it also allows adept users to pick up new tricks, or different ways to do the same thing.I've watched several other video tutorials, and I've had to pause, rewind, and then bang my head on the desk while I try and figure out which button they pressed to do what they just showed on the screen. It sure is good to see some others contributing to video documentation. I've just started laying the ground work for a video tutorial home, so if you're interested in helping out, give a shout!
