Ok, so i had heard that the next iteration of the winOS platform sdk would not be compatable with VS C++ 6.0. But i decided to download it last night anyways because i have the 2003 comand line compiler and 2005 express...
well it wouldnt be such a big deal but the damn install removed all of vc6.0's includes and replaced them with the new ones so now it wont run at all !!! whats worse is 2005 express is giving me all kinds of errors when compiling torque but vs 6.0 will compile all the way untill windows code and then bombs... what ever happened to setting your enviroment var's to point to sdk's instead of removing and over writing system included sdks.......
damn marketing department!

But, experience would have told me not to do that to begin with ;)

Well, it sounds like it did it in an invasive way, which is pretty typical of a Microsoft install. But, experience would have told me not to do that to begin with ;)

Not really pissed so much as irritated that they decided to break old programs when they up dated there sdk rather than installing it in a maner that doesnt break anything like all the old sdk's did... i just think its back handed.. kind of a heres something free for you! but inorder to use it give us $500 ... lol.... ah well

So let's be perfectly honest here, it's pretty unreasonable to expect support like this, the few rare times it does happens it almost always causes more problems in the long run just to do some short term appeasement. Also if you look around I believe that you will find that Microsoft actually has a lot of its programing tools and compilers available for free that you can plug into another IDE, so its really not as bad as you are first invisioning it to be.

If someone came up to me and bitched that I didn't give them immediate support for Lore Invasion for hardware that they had that was 5 years old and below the minimal specs outline I would tell them where to go and remind them not to have the door hit the ass on the way out because its a good door and I don't want it wrecked. It broke what worked, over wrote it. Like I said though, pretty typical of MS installs, they like to "upgrade" where possible ;)

I don;t think it's unreasonable to expect installations not to HARM existing installs. Which, I believe, is why he's annoyed :)It broke what worked, over wrote it. Like I said though, pretty typical of MS installs, they like to "upgrade" where possible ;)

Once I get a development environment that I'm happy with, I tend to pathologically avoid touching ANY of it.

Let this be a lesson: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.Once I get a development environment that I'm happy with, I tend to pathologically avoid touching ANY of it.

But seriously, expecting recent software to take into consideration ancient software like that is to expect it to work when you try to install Half-Life 2 in the same directory as the original Half-Life.

Also if you can deny any of the things I claim Microsoft to be then please post why. Im acually not a fanatic, so I wont post some crap unless I can back up the information(if you think I already have then post and ill find you the info).

Microsoft is one of the best software companys out there. They make good software, they sell it at a price people can afford, there honest(meaning what you pay for is what you get), They have inovated so many things. If you get pissed at them its because either you are using old software on new software or because you are just a typical MS sucks guy because its just a cool thing to do. And anyway if you dont like something dont buy it. Anyway I doubt you are acually this type of guy, im just writing this post for the anyone who is.Also if you can deny any of the things I claim Microsoft to be then please post why. Are we talking about the same company? Do you have any idea how many people/companies MS has screwed over (deliberately) to get to where they are today (IBM, Netscape, Logitech, and probably legions of little guys no one has ever heard of)? And MS doesn't innovate... they buy people/companies who do. And their ruthless business practices tend to stifle far more of the oh-so-precious "innovation" (a word they added to the technology landscape when they were on trial for monopolistic practices, a trial in which they were found GUILTY).
Does any of this come across as "honest" to anyone else?

Ok good point but I was meaning to the consumer end, not the dirty wars the companies fight.. What I really meant is that Windows XP is awesome, then again so is Linux.. Mac.... Yea there all good. I can see why someone could dislike Microsoft for the way the company is run. But that dosent mean the products dont work.

eh, i'm tired. please dn't attack me.

Even though i'm currently a windows user (dad makes me use it), I'm deeply considering moving onto Linux. Sure, I'll probably get less programs to run under Linux, since many programs and tools are windows exclusive. I, for one, tend to steer away from Microsoft products, since most virii/trojans are aimed at windows users. Plus, it's not open-source, unlike Linux - more people to help solve the bugs. Sure, some of you are probably going "oh, but that means that crackers will find/exploit the loopholes too" Yeah, but even if that happens, you'll have an entire community to check out the code. Of course, that's only if you're using the OpenSource version...eh, i'm tired. please dn't attack me.

oxymoron: Microsoft Works XD
sorry, i know that's pretty lame - just had to get it in, some joke I overheard X.x
But anyways, not that I WANT to attack Microsoft, it's just that I find other OS's to be better. And as to the products, sure, they work, but I usually would just find a free/open-source "version" of it that works. The alternative is often better suited for my needs, such as FireFox vs IE

I use Firefox too because IE is old. But trust me everyone will move to IE 7 because it has so many sweet feautres, go look it up. Also you shouldent attack someone because there product sucks or even if they sell it to high. Because you have the choice to buy it. Also its not considered attacking Microsoft if you find another OS better, at least not that I know of.. Although because I think Windows is the best system for most people, im going to ask you guys how much experiance you have with each system and why you like/dislike any OS. If anyone wants to try my Qbasic obertating system from 8 yrs ago just ask, I was only 10 then though. Haha just kidding those files are long gone.

Quick forum note: Discussions like this don't belong in the private TGE forums--if anywhere at all, they should be in the General--Industry section.

just my other 2 cents... lol

I wouldnt even care, but for those of us who are using old tech. you cant install visual c++ 6.0 with out the platform sdk because the files it comes with standard are broken. i fixed the situation by ordering an older platform sdk. if i had reformated my HD i would be screwed from the gitgo if i didnt want to shell out the $$ to order a cd with something that should be free to download. all-be it was only $9 for the cd. i still think they should atleast give an option some where to download older PSDK even if its on a different server that isnt as maintained or slower commection or something.. just my other 2 cents... lol

@Mark: A little animosity towards MS? I mean I'm a networking guy (and programmer) and a huge Linux fan. Though I wouldn't want you to take away all MS has done and accomplished. They may have been a bit dirty and very much opportunists, but I don't have to agree with their business practices to recognize that because of them a lot of the PC gaming industry is where it is (and obviously Xbox). Now Mac is getting better about it and I hope they take the computer gaming throne away from Windows, but if MS had not made decisions and developments then gaming on the PC would not be where it is now, online gaming included. Plus I like VC++, I hate windows, but appreciate what opportunities it has open.

They warned you and you did it anyways... now it doesn't work and your surprised? Why didn't you back up your files? or do a system restore point before trying this? No offense but you really don't have any room to complain.@Mark: A little animosity towards MS? I mean I'm a networking guy (and programmer) and a huge Linux fan.
