Newbie questions regarding intro movie and time counter

by Billy Am · in Torque Game Engine · 06/09/2005 (1:01 am) · 10 replies

Hi peeps
Firstly , I hope anyone can help me with playing an intro animation in torque ? It could be my company's logo or my game name or such. It will be imported into dts from max/maya ?

Secondly , I am making a racing game and i need to have a time counter to count how long it takes to finish the course. Can anyone suggest ideas on it as well? thanks
billy

You want to do an in-game intro animation or display a prerendered avi movie?

Well it's an "either/or" question not really a yes/no question. Do you want to animate something in the game engine OR do you want to display a prerendered avi movie?

I have been wondering the same thing. I would think that a prerendered AVI movie would be pretty simple but doing an in-game cut scene or movie would be a different story considering the movie would have to load/light/etc. Someone should make a tool for making cutscenes in torque. That would be sweet.

For in-game cutscenes, someone started a resource on this but it seems to have been abandoned. You can find it here.

For displaying an AVI movie on a machine with DirectX, check out this resource.

I have read that resource for the cut scenes before and it looked promising but its unfortunate that it hasnt been worked on in a while. I was waiting for it to be more complete and dont really have the knowledge to do any better. I may check it out and play around with it anyways on a bare starter and see how it works out. As far as the AVI im not really interested in it considering I dont have the software to do this...unless milkshape can...which I dont beleive it can. Thanks for your help.

You could use something like FRAPS to record your screen to an avi.

Fraps is a pretty good idea...mixed with the windows movie creator and you have a pretty cheap soloution. Fly-bys would be easy to do and cut scene stuff could be be great unsing fraps, albeit a bit tedious having to work with smooth and slow enough camera movement. Its definatly a viable soloution to an opening movie or cut scene. The great thing is its pretty much free...unless you want to have more than 30 seconds of video. Then you need to buy it. I'll definatly keep that in mind. Thanks
