Torque is awesome

Hi all,

After buying torque six months ago and buying "3d Programming all in one" nearly three months ago, I finally did..... something. I was so amazed at how easy the world editor was compared to even the world editor in 3dgs. It was so intutive I loved it... but I ran into a small problem I'm not even sure where this should be posted so, if this is the wrong area sorry. Any way I was basically modifiying the example mission that came with the rts.sk First I tried to create a new mission but i got an error message about some sort of file being missing. So i just saved the current example mission under a different name and started modifying it. A while ago i tried to do the rts resource mod that is found in the rts forum, that didn't work becaue i didnt' properly follow the instructions but all the models showed up in the shape folder for some reason and could be placed in the game world. So I just peppered the world with peseasnt and the like and after just trying out the different terrain editing features i hit the esc key and returned to the game itself. From that point the game just crashed and exited. Has anone had this problem?

Talking about the first 1/8th of your post, I am getting TGE in 1-2 days (long story short, the checks in the mail...) and hopefully seveal days afterword I'll be getting the book. :D

I
CAN
NOT
WAIT!!!!

TGE is just so freaking awesome! I can't wait to dig down and work in a engine thats so deep and complex as TGE which will take more then 1 weeks to grasp it!!! I can not wait!!! The wait is killing me, and the uncertianty of when I'll be able to get it is wrose!!! >.< Darnit I want TGE!

*cough* Sorry about that. But I think it should be understandable...

Be careful what you wish for. You just might get it. ;)

Might? There is no might with TGE! Which is now sitting on my harddrive waiting for TBE to be installed. :D

Glad your so excited over it! Thats great... though Mark's warning is waranted... TGE can be a bit overwhelming at first, just keep at it if it becomes so :)

TBE is great, I still think VC++ is worth the cost, though I've compiled both TGE and T2D on TBE as well as VC++

Well I just recently purchased an "Indie" license for Torque [3D] Game Engine, after a friend told me about it. That it also ran on Linux besides Windows and could possibly work for my RPG project. Speaking to another on IRC (not GarageGames) about the features, I was hooked to buy a license. I downloaded the installation file, quickly compiled it once I installed the missing dependancies. Compiled with no error, and was amazed at the performance the demo at all resolutions. Now I can't wait for the Torque Shader Engine to be made available on Linux, which I also going to buy an Indie license too.

I am truely glad that GarageGames made their excellent quality game engine cheaply available so that even hobbiests and free product makers can fillfull their dreams. Even though the game engine is not in the correct form for me to use, it does save me a heck of a lot of work on rendering and networking as most of this is already done. I can now just focus on RPG system rules/mechanics and modifying how the world is loaded, saved and unloading in real time (not preloaded world).

Oh the best bonus, is that I can take the source code to a Window friend to create a Windows binary, so the Windows crowd can also enjoy using my products. :)

@Rizzen--glad to see the enthusiasm! Only one (minor!) consideration: I don't think we'd have a problem with you simply "borrowing" your friends computer for compiling a windows binary, but don't leave the source code on his machine, or have him work on the code itself. Torque's EULA allows you to use multiple installations on multiple machines that you own, because the intent behind the requirement is that the Indie license is per developer--so if you wanted to have your friend view and use the source code, you would certainly have to have him buy a license.

This is a tricky area here, because Torque is not only so flexible with it's EULA, but also so very cheap, so please don't get caught up in sliding by the EULA.

Can you give me some reasons why VC++ is better then TBE? I do have the money to get it but I don't want to be throwing my cash everywhere.

Um ... has anyone had torque crash on them after making changes to a mission and escaping back to the game?

Stephen Zepp, not to worry. :)

The friend who I would use to compile the Windows version would be the one who introduced me to Torque, who happens to own the Indie license for Torque Game Engine and Torque 2D Game Engine. We use each other for generating other OS binaries for our projects.
