Resource Donations

Wouldn't it be nice if you could setup a PayPal (or some such service) option on your profile and have a link appear on all your resource pages that allows people to donate arbitrary amounts of money to you for the work you've submitted?

I certainly would drop $5 or $10 for each of the resources I found useful should the process be streamlined and integrated with the GarageGames site.

What are your thoughts?

I like the idea, and think it would result in more quailty documentation being contributed by members, or you could just paypal the money to the members email. I doubt they would mind.

True but I'm a lazy sod when it comes to that. If it's so easy that I don't even have to think then I'm personally more apt to act on the moment and donate. Right now, the only time I'll offer up money to someone is if they're talking about work they're doing that I find invaluable then I'll make an offer to try and get them to post a resource for everyone. If the resource is already there, the most you'll get out of me is feedback and/or bugfixes.

I agree. That would definately be a really good thing.

Only, I don't think it should go to the people. A lot of people dont have a paypal account. I think it should go to GG and the individual who submitted the resource should get that much GG credit.

@OneST8: I like the idea! Kind of like sourceforge. Nice.

@Chris: You want GG to become a private bank? Hehe. Paypal is offered in a lot of countries, it should be at least one of the options for donating, if a donating system was to be integrated with the GG site, imho. Otherwise GG will just get a lot of extra work (administrate donations, balances, creditcard processing fees, etc. I'd rather not see the GG crew get swamped up in this trivial stuff, as they have more important things to do (pun) ;-)

@Thijs - They already deal with things like that through all the online products they have. I don't think it would be a lot of extra hassle to encorporate that into the resources. Only this way it would keep the money in our community. Beafing GG up even more.

I wouldn't mind donating for quality resources. Resources that are not a pain to import and are well documented are greatly appreciated and the most one can do is credit the author. Off course you wouldn't be required to pay if you didn't want to so the only problem I see are the technicalities with the website and Paypal, if any.

You know, I guess you could always ask GG if it would be ok to add something like this to your resource:

@Chris: I personally wouldn't care for GG credits and would much rather the $$. "You can't eat credits" as they say. Also what about the situation where someone releases a super-uber-fantastical resource that so many people think is perfect that they all donate some cash and GG hands over 1,000 credits (or whatever) to the person who wrote the resource... now here's the problem... the person who wrote the resource already owns _everything_ GG has for sale including the games themselves. GG shouldn't be a Bank and should instead work on what they're good at; TGE/TSE/T2D/etc.

@Brandon: Sure that's a bit hackish but it does work. However, I'd much rather see GG take a proponent stance with this rather than just a "sure you can do that" gesture.

Why not post a link to the author's website as part of the resource where they can host the paypal link and not burden GG with the maint?

Because GG could always have a use fee associated with the donation say 5-10% of the donation in order to support using paypal as a donation structure for resources.

Ok, as a frequent resource poster I think it might be fun to get paid for it, but honestly the hassles associated on GG's end and mine negate the amount of money one MIGHT get from doing something like this. Also PayPal is a royal pain to get money from if you don't live in the USA and keep a bank account with a large bank... I DO live in the USA (well if you can call Wyoming a part of the USA), and I bank exclusively at credit unions, and have never once been able to setup and keep a PayPal account, either the bank throws a fit or PayPal does because most credit unions especially smaller ones, don't have their own routing number, they have a sponsor bank that does, and PayPals verification system chokes on this.

In all honesty I would rather build a reputation for having GREAT free resources, that are samples of a much bigger project I'm doing anyways, and then have people actually want to buy the much bigger project.

As you may or may not be aware I am working on an MMORPG starterkit for TGE, that I sincerely hope GG will pick up and market once it's ready, also when my game and kit are ready I hope that those who found my resources handy will in fact buy them.

Well thats my 2c
