Disabling snap-to-grid

Is there anyway to disable snapt-to-grid? Not being able to place vertices freely its causing me to create gaps and overlaps.

No there is not. However you can set the grid down to smaller units using the [ and ] keys. Set it down to 2 units for extremely fine placement.
