Lightwave / GMax to Torque

by Andy Hawkins · in General Discussion · 05/10/2005 (7:15 pm) · 11 replies

I would like to see if it's possible to do the following with Torque

Lightwave
- Export static and animations from Lightwave to Torque
- Does Torque support Lightwaves Bones and Weightmapping?
- Can I export a FPS level in Lightwave to a BSP to be loaded into Torque?

GMAX
- There was a thread saying it wasn't possible to export from GMax to Torque so we want to write an exporter. Where can we access the file spec so we can make a GMAX to Torque exporter?

Im pretty sure that its against the GMAX license to write an exporter without giving Discreet or Autodesk (whichever it is) several large sacks of money.

Goodluck on the lightwave exporter, though. :)

Lightwave exporter for DTS models
.map exporter for LW.

FAQ response about creating a GMax exporter. You might want to check their licensing FAQ before you think about this. A Sparks membership might be cost-prohibitive for your team.

Thanks David this is perfect. It seems the DTS export is free... Awesome! and with source code... even more Awesome-er...

The lightwave exporter is top notch, I haven't had any problems at all with it so far

Ahh thats right. Lightwave has an exporter and SoftImage doesn't. For whatever reason those two always get mixed up in my head.

@Andy

Information for writing a module for gMax can be found in your copy of 3DS Max and on sparks.discreet.com (and it is free to access, sorry to correct you there David it's the support that costs ya), the issue that you have though is that you cannot publicly release this module without paying the liscensing fee.

Personally I think its a pretty dumb idea to support gMax, liscensing issues aside, the code itself is based on Max 4 and is quite out of date not to mention the fact that the application is dead, there is no one supporting it (it is not worth Autodesk/Discreets resources to maintain it) or actively keeping it up to date.

OK! So I can write a GMax exporter to DTS exporter without Sparks support for nuthin right? As long as I don't sell the exporter I can generate models from GMax, export to DTS using my "soon to be created" exporter and then sell the game containing these models in Torque without having to pay a cent to Discreet right?

Ah, it was the public release thing I was thinking of. I was making a number of assumption jumps as I thought that licensing it for release precipitated a basic Sparks membership.

Thanks, Logan, for clearing it up! Sometimes my mind makes a number of disassociated jumps.

EDIT:
@Andy
It has nothing to do with commercial release. You can use it internally, but cannot release it to the public via any means. Free or commercial.

Cool so just to confirm....

- I can develop a plugin in for GMax internal without Sparks support or registration and not pay any money?

- As long as I dont release the exporter for GMax I am free and clear to use it on my Torque game then subsequently attempt to the sell the Torque game that I used the exporter on without encumberance to Discreet?

You'd have to check the license but I believe you wouldn't be able to release your game either without paying Discreet large amounts of money.

Isn't there a free Lightwave to MAP exporter somewhere? Greenbrier want $50 for theirs.
