Various RPG, Camera, Unit selection questions

Hello and howdy again all. More questions :) So I've been reading all day the forums and still trying to make sense of a lot of this. I tried searching for resources and haven't had much luck. I had a few ideas from the RTS kit that I thought would be neat to try but can't really find a way to do them.
1) First one is a single player/unit rpg/rts kind of game where you only control one unit but still use the rts engine commands. Kind of like Diablo where the camera follows your one unit around and no matter what you click, you are always "that unit". Is there a way to default by script which unit is selected and make it so that you cannot select anything else? Like just spawn "the hero" and then lock the camera and the mouse movements to him alone. This way you could have like 8 friends all online controlling their "hero" guy against AI monsters or even PVP.
2) Second one is a little bigger than the first one but still not a full RTS. Instead of just 1 hero you have a squad of heros, think X-Com real time or Baldurs gate. You would have 1-8 GUI pictures of their faces and when you click on their picture it selects the hero and then all movement/combat is done for that character. You can cycle through your team but you always have one guy selected. Maybe even add in a "select all" to do mass moves taking from the RTS code as it is.
Any thoughts/comments/ideas?
Thanks as always!
