Little Gods

by Jason McIntosh · in Torque Game Builder · 05/04/2005 (11:50 pm) · 76 replies

A very early shot from my upcoming game, Little Gods.

The background is very animated with a lot of layers and has quite a few things that happen at random intervals, like that little guy sailing across the screen.

Looks great and original, Jason. Any chance of a fraps video capture? :)

Thanks for the compliments, guys! I really appreciate it.

I do want to make a video, because it looks a lot better in motion. What is a fraps and where do I get one? :)

Edit: Actually, I think I could just tell the engine to take a screenshot every few frames and then assemble those into a movie. Hmm.

@Jason

It is a good screen capture tool that alot of game videos are generated with.

No movie yet, but here's a new screenshot of the character selection screen.

You can manage player profiles here: create a new one, delete one, and/or choose which one to use for this match. The computer can also be selected if you need an opponent and no people are around. I put quite a bit of thought into the layout to make it as easy and obvious to use as possible.

And of course it has Greg's fantastic art all over the place.

What's the art being done in? Love the feel it has. Is he sketching/scanning/painting? or all digital? Sweet look. Can't wait to see it finished. Of course, this is *beggin* for networkability, too. Plus, cross-platform? Nice.

Greg did a variety of things to create the art. A majority of it is all digital. He uses a Wacom tablet. The arena backgrounds are interesting because he started with drawings on paper, cut them out, scanned that in layers, then ditigally put them together and retouched. I'm trying to get him to write up some info about it, but he's resisting. :)

Something you can't tell from the shots is that the sky layer moves and the moons and various other things move as well. Lots of motion, and there are small animation events that happen randomly.

Network play is a possibility for a future version, but probably not going to happen. And I got the Mac version running tentatively just the other day with almost zero effort. Gotta love Torque for that.

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

The finalized character selection screen. We're really close to being finished now. I've also just completed the AI opponent with (internally) configurable difficulty profiles in the form of the different characters you can play against.

Hat's off to the artist! I'm glad to see that talent and creativity are alive and well. Pong with "gods" and god-powers? And I thought Pong was played-out. Sounds like a blast!

Tried it out, seems very very polished, I won... not sure how, I didn't read the instructions so its a little confusing, but I'll definitely put more time into learning it when I have time.

I've updated the demo with a bunch of tutorial information and gradual introduction of gameplay elements, so you might want to make sure you have the latest one. It will probably make things easier to get used to as this is not just an Arkanoid clone. ;)

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. :)
