RPG Starter Kit?

by Dreamer · in Torque Game Engine · 05/04/2005 (7:27 am) · 12 replies

I have noticed alot of requests for an RPG starter kit, I am nearly done writing the last of my advanced tutorials on MMORPG, these more advanced ones actually explain reasons for doing things a certain way as well, rather than just being show me the code tutorials, Like I have been doing thus far.

I would like to share this as a single tutorial (ebook pdf etc), describing all the steps needed to go from starter.fps to a starter.rpg implementation, in a much more logical, ordered and accurate form than the free stuff I have been doing in the resources section of the website. After the numerous changes to scripting and the engine itself, there would deffinetly be a need to either package the whole thing up (engine code, scripts etc..) or at a minimum all the changed and added files.

To complicate matters, I notice that my indie license does not appear to permit this, since it doesn't in fact qualify as a game, but instead is more of a framework. I have emailed Jeff and a few others, asking if GG would be interested in doing the distribution of this, to keep it out of the hands of non-license holders, and have never recieved a reply. Which indicates to me a lack of interest. (to be fair it may be that they have been too busy to reply, or my email isn't getting through, rather than simply being a lack of interest in the project itself) Furthermore if I'm reading the commercial license correctly, upgrading to that would not allow me to distribute this, either.

So I'm considering my alternatives... Only problem is that I don't know of any... Is there maybe some kind of alternative license to the standard indie and commercial ones? Am I even reading the license correctly?

Anyways, as always thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I don't recall getting this email. There are many licensing issues involved. Please contact joshw at garagegames dot com to discuss.

Well, if nobody else is interested in a big .pdf file of all of this work, I sure would be :)

The tutorials you've posted so far are great. I'm looking forward to the advanced ones.

Thanx, I just gotta be careful because I really don't want to violate my EULA.

Dreamer

I have read alot of the mmo tuts you put up and they are very well written, If you release it that would actually be one of the few SDK's I would want to purchase.

You have been a real asset to the community lately and hope that your work can get published.

Currently I have been doing interior models with cart shop, parthenon and a few others if you get a pack going perhaps I could give them to you to use free. Would just be nice to see some of my work go somewhere.

@David, thanks for the kind words, and Hey that idea about swapping code for models sounds kewl... I am also going to release Dream (The full game as a precompiled binary) into the wild as a free to play MORPG in and of itself as well (I am currently writing up a .plan that explains how I believe you can make money with a free to play MORPG in an already saturated market), unfortunately modeling especially interiors is something I suck at terribly. If interested in hooking up on that, when this is all done, please feel free to email me smorrey@gmail.com

Character and Item Modelers are also wanted/needed :)
