Hey guys,
I have a bit of a problem.

Since it is my birthday Sunday, I decided that I could go and spend about 400 bucks and buy some new stuff.

Anyway I can either buy the video card I want right now or I can buy the parts for the system I want right now and buy the video card later. What do you think is a better Idea.

I currently have a
xp2000+ with 512 of ddr pc2100 memory and a g4 4600 card.

I want to get the most out halflife 2.

So should I buy the gforce 6800 gt now or should I buy the following first and use the g4 until I get a new card:

ASUS P4S800D-X Socket 478
intel p4 prescott 3.0 ghz
1 gig 3200 ddr(dual channel)

I'm going to keep the rest of my drives for now and get a SATA drive later.

Which do you think would be the best bet for now?

My personal opinion on following CPU and vid card prices is alot of the time the Vid cards price drops much faster than a CPU price. So getting the system then upgrading the vid card later may prove more cost effective.

Yeah, I've been thinking about that but the cards dropped 100 bucks since its release and I can't see it dropping any more then then for another few months.

Also considering that Intel just released there 64 bit chip, there may be a better chance of seeing those chips/boards go down sooner then the video cards do.

Thats about the basis for whats giving me the hardest time making the desision.

Although I would need a new power supply to get the video card so It would probably just be better to upgrade the comp

Anyone else have an opinion on this?

I'd say stick to your current setup, but spend that money on the vid card and a better heat sink. Then overclock the 2000+. Keep in mind, you can always move the good vid card into a new system later if need be.
My current setup is a desktop with an Athlon XP 2400+ mobile, stock 1.8, OC'ed to 2.1 right now with no temp issues whatsoever. At least with AMD, mobile chips are the way to go. Definately worth the extra cash -- with my currently 300MHz speed bump, with my cpu cooler on minimum, the idle temp is about 2*C over the room's ambient. :D The only time i've ever seen the chip go above 40*C was when I had it clocked up to 2.4, and was running a prime 95 stress test with the cooler on minimum. (And it was still sub 50).

It's always a bit of a gamble when you consider that a new generation of cards usualy comes out at the end of the year. At the moment the best value video card is definately the 6600GT.

As far as CPU's go, I'm not sure how long it would take for the new Dual core CPU's to take over the mainstream consumer Market, and what kind of premium they will have initialy.
