Turn Based FPS?

Am I the only one that has noticed the banner at the top of the page, when it's the ad for torque says turn based FPS, shouldn't it be RTS because I have no idea how you could ever make a turn based (First Person Shooter).

I guess the main advantage of doing it that way would be that you'd get better control over other party members during combat, so you could basically create an FPS where you control a group of 10 guys. The other guys could follow you rpg-style while not in combat, and when you encountered some guys, it would switch to turn-based mode. Maybe you could also split up into smaller groups, and do separate tasks with each group, so the basic flow of the game would be a little different.
Wow, someone make this game; I want to play it.
Edit: Turn-based RTS wouldn't make any sense anyway. It's kind of a contradiction of terms.

You could make it fun. Just make the combat turn based and leave everything else like a normal fps. Player 1:
Controls A, B and C
Player 2:
Controls X, Y and Z (And W if he was one of those homogenous types)
So the game starts, Player 1 gets to move B, Player 2 moves Z, Player 1 moves C, Player 2 moves X, Player 1 moves A, Plyaer 2 moves Y.
Now the shooting phase. You can only aim in a certain arc, so you have to do your facing during the movement phase. So they go again. Depending on how far you moved maybe you'd have more or less time to aim, or reduced accuracy or both or something.
Could be cool.
As a side note, I also have a game design for Extreme Monkey Lacross.

I could totally see this. You'd have different phases, the way I'd see it. Players take turns going back and forth, but the order of actions, within their team, is random. Or maybe you'd have special abilities that let you go last or something. Anyway though.Player 1:

Also, I think there was a Warhammer40K-licensed game in the early 90's that might be called a turn-based FPS. It was a squad-based game where you were fighting aliens - it had (IIRC) step-based movement like the old Wizardry/ Bard's Tale / Dungeon Master / Eye of the Beholder RPGs.

Check out the Combat Mission games (more indie goodness!) It's turn based for entering in commands for your units - but then it runs a 30-second real-time turn where you are watching your plans meet with the enemy plans and crumble. Also, I think there was a Warhammer40K-licensed game in the early 90's that might be called a turn-based FPS. Are you thinking about Space Hulk? Great game. I loved watching the enemies in the mini-map. It actually felt like real AI, unlike most any game I'd played before it. Especially when they'd leave one alien to draw your fire and circle around to attack from behind. Fun stuff!

If someone wanted to make another game like this with graphics from the new generation, I would be very excited about it.
X-Com Apocalypse: turn Based RTS. Or at least it was close this this genre.

Ditto on Space Hulk. Great game. I loved it. I had it for the old 3DO system. (don't laugh) I liked that system and it had some great games. One thing that was especially good was the controllers had a headphone jack. I could play in the middle of the night, audio blasting and disturbing noone. If someone wanted to make another game like this with graphics from the new generation, I would be very excited about it.

I love reading about shelled, I was a HUGE fan of scorched earth back in the day and to have a updated 3d version with comical turtles I think is ingenious.

Hmm maybe its like Turn Based Strategy (TBS) where you have squads each team controls... movement is turned base, when your unit reaches an enemy one you can attack (with traditional TBS flanking, rear assault, etc which give handicaps and penalties)... then when you enter combat its all out FPS action with these modifiers placed, until one unit wins or the other retreats... in a sense this is what ancient combat was... groups of people being ordered by commanders... the commanders orders being the turn based part (they often wait to see what the enemy is doing and order accordingly)... then when combat hits its no longer turn based and each unit has their own mind (like in a real battle where each person then fights there own style)... could be fun :)

Worms 3d is a turn based fps... partially anyway. And its an insane amount of fun to boot. Check it out if you have the means.

I think the point is that you can make anything you want with tge. Its a 3D rendering engine after all. We could 'in theory' put Mythic Blades code with the Torque rendering engine and it would still work as a fighting game.

But it wouldn't be that difficult. It would be like the Wizardry games, but as a shooter. Aim and "shoot" which was like the Attack command. Unless they "move", you'll have a chance to hit them.
At least conceptually. Probably wouldn't be a whole lotta fun, though.
