At Last!! Minions of Mirth Has done it!!!

by Johnny Hill · in General Discussion · 04/09/2005 (9:54 pm) · 98 replies

I have been exploring Minions of Mirth world and I must say its very very good. This is torque used like I imagined from the beginning :)

Now like the newb I was I didnt read anything at first. I didnt even try single player world but instead jumped straight into the alpha world. And I was grinning from ear to ear. :)

Josh was on and took me on a tour of the place. It took me a min but I manage to catch on to the controls and was checking out the local city, watching Josh demonstrate the realistic effects like weather rain ice, spell effects in the world and on some of the people heh.

I know some on GG play WOW but imagine the same functionality done by a smaller team using torque, Iam not talking graphically I mean functionality was dead-on smooth. Similiar but different still.

We went to the mountain zone to check out the dwarven ruins and Killed some bears and a old great bear. I forgot the bear name. :)

The goblins had invaded the ruins so they were everywhere. The interiors were dark and creepy like most dungeons. I like the way the doors glow eerily, but they will only open if you possess the key.

Did I mention this was made using Torque LOL :)

Thanks :)

I wish I could say more but lets just say I see POSSIBLITIES!! :))

As far as controlling mutliple party members. That is one smooth feature. You can take your own group to some of the harder places in the world.

No more channel/4 LFG lvl 25+ needed for sucide run :)

Switching out and creating new chars in-game at the inns is a time-saver. A nice feature! how many time you needed to get one more person to help with a quest and couldnt find one. :)

And yes this was made using Torque :)) The only tech I can say about it :) INDIE POWERED!!

MoM looks great! How can I download and test it?

Josh has a open-alpha test going on now with a server up running the world and its additional zones.

The information is here: Alpha Information

Those dynamic skies are great looking and the night sky with the moon the stars actually twinkle. LOL

@Johnny Hill: I am glad you like it :) That giant bear is 'Azagwar', an old spirit of the forest. Here's an explanation for the glowing door where we needed the Key to Zharim. By the way, I figured out a way to get you "Boots of the Cheetah" for next time :)

A lot of people have asked if we are going to have sprites or 3d models. I am pleased to have an answer now: 3D Models

I've kind of come up with a standard tour in multiplayer. It takes around an hour to show gameplay features and a couple of the zones. I don't remember having so much fun. I felt a bit like Willy Wonka :)

Massively Single Player, Massively Multiplayer (not in the conventional (kinda boring) sense. It's like the MUDs of old, though 3D and MUCH easier to use. MMORPG are just 3d muds with nice graphics, that you pay by the month, and are totally out of the player's/community's control.), MoM is completely mod-able/customizeable, and you can even be an Immortal in your OWN world.

We will be running an Open Alpha relatively soon (though the feature/enhancement list keeps getting expanded for this *wink*). We haven't decided an exact number for the Open Alpha yet. Though, if you have a dedicated machine for hosting your own MoM persistent world, we'll make sure you get in.

Again, to the people who have been in there checking out the game, thanks for the HUGE props. It is so wonderful to hear... What an adventure!

I don't want to be a party pooper but there is mention above about this being on the Torque engine. But your site states your games are open source with a link to Source Forge. Is MoM on the Torque engine or your own engine? Or did I miss this answer already?

Thanks,

We moved to the Torque engine in late January.

The web site needs updating badly... current information can be found in the Forums.

Let's see if I can get the history somewhat accurate (haha). It began in Nebula, moved to Torque, then to Quake II, and now back to TGE. At least, I think that's how it went. You should definitely check out the Prarie engine modifications, though. They're pretty damn awesome!

Oh, you are missing quite a bit of history there... Quake III for instance... and there was also an incarnation using an engine I wrote myself (which has shipped 12 retail games).

Torque is a perfect fit for Minions of Mirth. Take it from guy whose been thru a beef grinder, there is no better indie engine on the planet.

I like the "Crappy Ring of the Brazen" in one of the screenshots on the site ;^)

I took those shots on the OSX version of the Quake2 based Prairie Engine... they all turned out really, really dark... and I never took new ones. The shots are quite old now and will soon be retired.

The Quicktime linked here is kinda neat, even without music.

This has been a really, really long road. I've learned a lot in the process... no regrets.

Ah, that's right. Q3 was in the mix until the GPL version was delayed, right?

I loved playing the OSX preview. Lots of fun. I'm looking forward to MoM. My money's already in the pre-order bank!

Ahhhh!!! You people are amazing! I've been dreaming of a 3D mud...a REAL mud not one of those BS MMORPGS, you obviously know what I mean because you DID IT!

Sorry...I get a little excited sometimes. OHMIGOD!!!! 3D MUD!!!
emote bounces around the room.

Thank you Josh, this is absolutely fantastic.

Sorry to hijack this but... I don't get the flames on MMORPG's. I don't know very many of them that present themselves as 3D MUD's. My understanding of a MUD, at least the definition tied to them, is the ability to create your own content (rooms and such). This one seems to be a 3D MUD in that sense. Is that your definition as well?

Also, if MoM adds multiplayer support and if they continue to use the Torque engine which technically is only limited to your hardware for amount of users... then wouldn't MoM become an MMORPG? *grin*

MUD's were ORPG's some were even MORPG's.... there were even a few commercial MUD's that could have been called MMORPG's in their day. (Commercial MUD's were limited in that you generally couldn't create new content yourself)

@Labrat: I implemented your channel memory feature. It's much nicer not having to constantly type /a to talk to your alliance... thanks :)

3d mud is pretty much right. You can run your own world as an immortal and I will be adding Guardians soon. These are players that Immortals grant special abilities to.... You can create custom content (including items, quests, zones, spells, spawns, etc)...

World Administration is pretty much dead simple... and will become simpler as it's worked on.

Players have their own party of 1-6 characters... characters can be added, removed, and even created in the game at inns...

It's also 100% playable single player...

We're freaking out here at Prairie Games... someone pinch me :)

We are looking for assistance with writing quests, items, spells, and things... I've published a couple RPG editing tutorials:

RPG Editing Tutorial #1

RPG Editing Basics

Please note that this isn't as overwhelming as it may seem and there are plenty of samples... There's also a real working game to test things in..

If you've always wanted to help make a Massively Single Player, Massively Multiplayer, 3D MUD, Persistent World RPG, with sprinkles. Now would be a good time to get involved.

Please email samples to: lara@prairiegames.com
