Tutorials - Hello World series

by John Vanderbeck · in Torque Game Builder · 04/07/2005 (1:16 pm) · 36 replies

In a similar vein to the MinApp tutorials I did for TGE, I have begun work on a series of "Hello World" tutorials for T2D. This will be extremely simple basic applications written totally from scratch in TorqueScript. As a result they will teach the basics of writing applications in T2D without the need to be confused or burdened by all the existing script code.

These will give a solid grasp on just what you really need and don't need in order to write T2D applications.

Expect to see Hello World1 later today.

John, I want to echo Gabor's thoughts, I thought you did an excellent job on these tutorials and they have helped me immensely. I went over tutorial 2 code when you posted it in beginning of April and it was so clear I did not think there would be much gained from your actual tutorial writeup but after reading through it I can see I was wrong. I gained much better insight into how T2D (actually all TAP) works. For me seeing how you build from a "blank sheet" is invaluable.

thanks for all your great work. And I can't wait to see tutorial 3 either!

I think these tutorials are excellent and serve as a very good introduction to people (like me) who don't even know the TAP general structure. Personally, I like that #2 is heading down the road using just the T2D executable in an empty directory as it helps me create a "clean" project (without all the extra stuff which I don't know whether I need or not) and explains the very basics.

Great job and my vote is to keep writing them if time permits ;)

John,

Wanted to thank you for "Hello World 1 & 2" They're great, the best I can find on torque scripting. Only wish your were finishing "Hello World 99". Can you give us a sneak preview of what "Hello World 3" will cover? Can't wait to get my hands on it.

Thanks for the tutorials and your time investment.

Hi John,

I've just finished reading your 2 *very* nice tutorials and have done some efforts to move my current project over to a "clean sheet" setup - which I like very much. Then I can add more from the standard if I need it.

I'm really looking forward to the next articles in this series - can't wait!

Cheers,
Johan

Oh, by the way - it looks like there's a minor typo in #2: I think somehow the game folder has got it's name changed to main and main.cs to game.cs on the rows before and after the heading "The Main Game Script".

I'd like to take a look at these but apparently the links are broke. Does anyone have a mirror?

I apologize for these being down. I've moved webhosts and forgot to move them to my new server, and at the moment i'm having technical difficulties with my server. As soon as I get it rectified though I will make sure to get these back online.

Sorry!

From what I've read, these tutorials sound great. Any word on when they might be available again? Or is there any other way to get them?

I'd like to get these too. Why aren't they in the resources? If anyone can put them up somewhere I'm sure a few of us would appreciate it.

I don't know how long I will host these, but it seems John Vanderbeck is having a bit more trouble than he anticipated with his server.

Hello World 1 - text
Hello World 1 - data

Hello World 2 - text
Hello World 2 - data

Let me know when you get those files up, John :).
