TIDE and Torque2D
by Gina-Marie -Netjera- Hammer · in Torque Game Builder · 04/03/2005 (8:28 am) · 12 replies
I've finally got TIDE installed, and I can certainly use it as a text editor in all of its glory. However, I can't get it to link up to the Torque2D game executables when I want to use it for debugging.
I was wondering if anyone had gotten this working?
Btw, just as a point of reference for those looking: TIDE takes less work to set up then most people think. The documentation is a little confusing but I do not mind trying to help people out. I started with the TIDE executable file for Windows available on the SourceForge site. It contained all the plugins necessary for it to work.
I did come across two basic types of errors:
1) JLauncher needs to be installed
2) Various plugins needed to be reinstalled
I got those working fairly easily, so if anyone needs help with basic setup, feel free to ask. TIDE is *way* cool! heehee

Worked like a charm :) Only thing is that you're looking for 'project viewer' rather than 'project manager'.

That was off the top of my head, i wrote something similar in a post about JEdit a while ago, but thats what i could remember.

Are those instructions to get the debugger working? Or some nice, shortcut instructions for getting TIDE working in general?
Thanks!

Chris: I installed from the full version on the TIDE website, yes.Are those instructions to get the debugger working? Or some nice, shortcut instructions for getting TIDE working in general?
Thanks!

Eh, well, actually I hope to use Python with T2D, but I'm still curious about Brain Edit because it looks nice.

I presume Brain Edit doesn't include the stuff for T2D yet? Or does it?Eh, well, actually I hope to use Python with T2D, but I'm still curious about Brain Edit because it looks nice.

Not to hijack this thread, but this thread is what's caused my question, so here goes ;^)
Has anyone else run across the problem with jEdit only having empty, widget-less dialogs? I have uninstalled all of my Javas, downloaded the latest jre-1_5_0_02-windows-i586-p from java.com, reinstalled, rebooted (many times), etc. and I still only get blank dialog boxes (everything except the splash screen is blank)...
For example
I'm having trouble finding the right things to Google for to look for help (I'm not a Java guy whatsoever...)
Thanks,
Mike
EDIT/UPDATE: Nevermind. It turns-out that Java has some stupid issue with anti-aliasing when it's forced-on (as I had done in my ATI driver panel). Turning that off fixes it. Just FYI for anyone else who might be having issues.

Other than that, TIDE living is great. :)

I haven't had a problem with jEdit or Tide. They're running great for me. Only problem is that I can't debug. I can actually even run my game from inside jEdit.. it just gives me a "connection error" when I exit out of it and I have to be careful because sometimes it hides the error message window and that makes it look like it's hanging. (But it isn't.)Other than that, TIDE living is great. :)

I've got a TideProject.properties file pointing at T2D.exe, in the same directory at T2D.exe. Syntax highlighting and project searching are working. I do have the debugger buttons, and I do have Project Viewer supporting all my extensions, so my files are right there, nice and visible.
The debugger, however, doesn't seem to work at all. I have no idea how the debugger knows which directory or .properties file to run from. "Recompile Buffer" seems to do absolutely nothing.
And, of course, I get the Jlauncher issue as well, if I launch from jedit.exe instead of jedit.jar. Solution? Launch from jedit.jar.
It took me a good few hours of screwing around with Sun's stupid JDK installs (some omit tools.jar, hooray!) and jEdit settings to get even this far. So far, jEdit isn't impressing me. Should I just edit my scripts in vim, and rely on the in-game script debugger? Are there any big advantages to Visual Studio .NET or BrainEdit? I would sure love the breakpoint functionality of TIDE (does it support edit and reload/continue for scripts?).

I'm getting the same problems: I hit the play button, it pauses a while, then it gives me: "This error received when connecting to the Torque Debugger: Connection refused: connect". I'm still unsuccessful in passing command line args to the debugger: I tried "gameExecutable=T2D.exe -mod firsttutorial", but that has no effect.

Update: it mis-patched main.cs. I'll go in manually and see if I can do a better job. It's launching T2D now that I reverted the main.cs. I'm still unsuccessful in passing command line args to the debugger: I tried "gameExecutable=T2D.exe -mod firsttutorial", but that has no effect.

Unfortunately, since I'm so new at programming in general, I don't have any scintillating suggestions for fixing this problem - all I can do is whine and hope. ^_^

I'd love to see if this can work fully. I actually have my game play. If I click the play button, I have no troubles running the game until I try to exit out. Then when I go back, there's a hidden window displaying the connection issue. (First few times, that window was hidden behind the normal TIDE window and I thought the whole darn thing had locked up.) Unfortunately, since I'm so new at programming in general, I don't have any scintillating suggestions for fixing this problem - all I can do is whine and hope. ^_^

I just use jEdit, set on C# or some such language, and run my game from a shortcut placed on the start bar. It's all I really need.
Torque Owner Chris Newman
Install the newest version of JEdit. www.jedit.org/
Grab the Tide.jar file and put it in the jars folder in the JEdit dir. prdownloads.sourceforge.net/torqueide/Tide.jar?download
Start up JEdit, get an error. Go to plugins->plugin manager.
Click the install tab. Click on name to sort the list, go down to "project viewer"
install that. Restart JEdit.
I never had an issue with Jlauncher. Is that because you installed the setup from the TIDE website (Jedit with TIDE included) ?
