New Guy Needs Help

Hey I've been programming in C++ for sometime now and consider myself a intermediate programmer. I've always wanted to get into game design but I've never really been sure where to begin. Anyways, I was wondering if you all could point me in a good direction. I want to start off 2D to learn basics before jumping into the world of 3D. I'm not trying to do anything big initally I just want to be able to make some simple little things that allow me to experiment with the different tools that are available.

So essentially I want to learn. Right now I now only what I have learned from the Computer Science Courses I have taken which of course deal with making little apps that are all text based and some database types. I was thinking about going with the Torque 2D but seeing as how I have ZERO experience with Engines I was wondering if I would be out of my league. I don't want to make the mistake of jumping in the deep end without learning how to swim first (I've already done that a few times and I'm tired of drowning).

So what do you all think. Should I just go ahead and start up with Torque 2D or should I try somthing else first? It's a cause I'm very much commited too I've just been lost as to where I should begin. Thanks for reading this hope to hear from some of you all soon.

I think T2D is likely one of the best, easiest ways to start - AND come out with a really sharp product at the end.

I've mentioned this in a couple of threads now, but based on how successful people of all different experience levels (including those brand new to game development) are doing with T2D, you just can't go wrong with it if you want to get some exposure to an engine environment.

And the huge benefit is that if it comes naturally to you (or even with a bit of work!), you have a natural lead-in to the rest of the TAP (Torque Application Platform), including TGE and TSE for your 3-D and advanced 3-D/Shader progression.

First let me say this is an awesome community because I didn't expect responses this quick. Thanks for the input so far. Based on what you all have said so far I think I will go with T2D. Especially since this community seems really supportive and active (Somthing I havn't seen in some of the other places I have been). Once again thanks for the quick responses and if anyone has any other input I am all ears.

*Side Note Question: I can't see the tutorials because I don't havn't bought T2D yet. Can anyone tell me how basic / informative they are ? I'm always affraid with Tutorials that they will go real easy and tell you what you already know and then assume you know somthing else.

I can confidently say that the T2D tutorial is one of the best introductory tutorials in the TAP...if not for any game engine, and I'm sure that any of the current T2D owners that aren't buried deep in making their games will agree!
