Mesh conversion...

I've recently purchased a model (IceTigerMech) from TurboSquid that I'm wanting to use during my prototyping phase. The author is willing to convert it from its current format (.max) to the proper Torque format, but he's never had a request for it before and he's never done it. I have precisely *no* experience with this sort of thing, so I'm looking for help.
I was wondering if anybody here could point me in the right direction?
A step-by-step guide?
A suggested tool-chain I can point him to?
Already done it, and willing to send the results back to the author?

I don't use max, but the exporter should work for various versions. I can't give any help on the particulars, though.
