TorqueWiki.com Launched!
by Michael \"Evic\" Wales · in Torque Game Engine · 03/27/2005 (6:31 pm) · 10 replies
As I previously discussed today in another topic, I have been working on getting a Torque Wiki launched for some time now. Well, today is the day! Unfortunately, a lot of my database backups didn't quite make the transfer so much of the content I had been working on isn't in there yet.
As we all know, the nature of a Wiki is everyone is allowed to edit and create content. I'm confident this community is mature enough to handle this responsibly and help make TorqueWiki a very powerful resource.
I will be up most of the night continuing to add content to the wiki, although much of it will be marked as a stub. I don't want to spend to much time getting the content perfect myself, I'd like to get some groundwork laid out, and let you guys flesh the content portions out.
So, hit up www.TorqueWiki.com and check it out. Also, let me know how the server is running. I am getting some slow connections myself, but I am on an unfamiliar connection as I vacation here in Florida and I am unsure whether it is a problem on my end or the web servers. Anonymous users have the same access as registered users, but I encourage all of you to register and help me out.
A wiki is only as good as the community makes it. Also, I will be paying careful attention to the quality of the work put into TorqueWiki by the community members. That work, and the work of those members here in the forums, will give me a list of names of whom I will invite to become TorqueWiki Moderation Board members.
As I always, I welcome comments, suggestions, etc.

Can you make clear what kind of source code can be shown?
I only ask this because i can log out and find a few resources with soure code.

I think I need to do some closer reading over my license specifically and see if I can get in contact with a few of you GG guys to discuss where the line actually needs to be drawn on what is acceptable and what is not.

As we have been discussing in the Private SDK forum, I don't see TorqueWiki progressing to that point anytime soon. One thing we did notice though, is GG is already sharing a lot of source code with the public via the References. So, I don't really think that's where the line needs to be drawn on what should be public and what should be private.I think I need to do some closer reading over my license specifically and see if I can get in contact with a few of you GG guys to discuss where the line actually needs to be drawn on what is acceptable and what is not.

For TGE/TSE:
Anything dealing with the C++ source: bad for external Wiki.
Anything else: good for external Wiki.
For T2D:
Anything dealing with the C++ source of TorqueScript files tied to T2D: bad for external Wiki.
How to use the editors, creating artwork, etc: good for external Wiki.

It doesn't seem that difficult to me. Use 3D Game Programming All In One as a frame of reference. For TGE/TSE:

It's not open to the public yet, and I'm not quite sure what to say. Obviously we'd rather have people contribute to one, official Wiki, but on the other hand you obviously put effort into TorqueWiki.com and I don't want it to seem like we are at all tramping on that.

See, David, we already have a solution for that. Our Wiki is tied to the Torque purchase history so we know what people can and can't see already. It's located at:http://tdn.garagegames.com

Yeah. I was just mentioning that I didn't think that determining the content according to the license would be that difficult. As in the other topics about wikis and Torque, I'm excited by the potential.

I spoke with Josh Williams this morning, and Ben Garney was cc'd on the discussion. I was unaware of the TDN as I worked on TorqueWiki (.plans are not very good ways to announce what's coming) and after looking over some information on TDN decided it was definnitely the best way to go. Josh Williams has offered a chance for me to work with you guys on TDN, and I'm taking that route for sure.

What's going to happen with the torquewiki.com domain? Are you guys going to work out some sort of deal so that it points to tdn.garagegames.com rather than having it parked?

Yes, TorqueWiki.com will point to the TDN (unless I get some amazing and unexpected offer to sell). I have offered GG two options: A) provide me nameservers to use to point the domain to tdn.garagegames.com, or B) purchase the domain from me for my purchase price ($8.95) and handle all the transfer fees.

I'm glad to hear an official Torque Wiki is on the way. I think it'll prove an immensely useful resource.
