Possible 3 letter word exceptions list for search engine

Using the search feature seems to ignore 3 letter word searches. Would it be possible to maybe have some execptions to this rule.
Searching for things like STL, lod, 3ds, avi, gui, dif, dts, and bot would be some good exceptions off the top of my head.

Joseph, you're a genius. You should submit that as a resource or something.

But I don't think "add * to your 3 letter search" would be much of a resource. :)

Lol, thank you.But I don't think "add * to your 3 letter search" would be much of a resource. :)

Damn wish i'd known that in the past. I've had to search for lots of small words that ended up filtered.

This is an interesting trick, but it's not perfect. For instance... if you search the forums for STL using the * method above this thread which mentions STL several times will not be returned. This trick can only help you when the 3 letter word is used as a prefix for a greater than 3 letter word.

I get 3 pages of stuff come up for stl*... (okay don't get this page but at least it works on most other searches.) :\

Not sure how your getting 3 pages of results and i'm getting one. Still look thru those results... *you won't find this thread*... my point being that this trick will only return partial results. Specifically only results that contain a four letter word prefixed by STL.

Are you typing left-handed, Tom? ;)

When I search for stl* in the forums, I get 27 different threads as results. It doesn't surprise me that this thread does not show up in the results, since it's such a new thread, and probably hasn't been indexed into the database. If I search for lod*, I get lots of results as well, and as far as I can tell, none of these threads simply have words that start with lod that are more than 3 characters. Seriously, what words begin with stl?Are you typing left-handed, Tom? ;)

As for lod..... LODs lod0 lod1 lod2... but it seems to also return "exploded" "lodge" (see the third result for lod* titled Challenge).
So this trick is maybe worse that i thought.

I probably have better things to do, but i'm neurotic about responding to posts and searching is my pet topic.Quote:When I search for stl* in the forums, I get 27 different threads as results.I do too... all one one page. I suppose by 3 you ment page down scrolls.

If you look at the first post Todd misspelled exceptions as "execptions"... if you search the forum for "execptions" you get this as the only post.

Quote:Seriously, what words begin with stl?A simple search will tell you... stl_fix STLPort stl_patch ..... it returns one thread whos only mention of STL is in "homeSTLy" (whatever that word is supposed to be). So worse it returns STL *within* words too!
As for lod..... LODs lod0 lod1 lod2... but it seems to also return "exploded" "lodge" (see the third result for lod* titled Challenge).
So this trick is maybe worse that i thought.

Ah, I see I should have done a little more homework before pointing my 3 fingers at you :) My take on the situation is this: the * "fix" is not really a fix, as it doesn't truly return the complete set of results. However, it does provide some results, and certainly more results than not searching at all. Sometimes I couldn't think of related topics that would yield some results, where this method will at least give me something. Todd's idea is a good one, as long as the database allows it. Thanks for being patient :)
