No, no... You must be mistaken. We sent Tim to, you know, sneak into the Valve offices, and then he made the demo. He.. He'd never lie to me and just sleep in and watch the Terminator movies instead. He just wouldn't! I won't accept it!

Yeah, okay. :)

Yes. Must not advertise! It's something only big eeeeeevil corporates that love to waste money do! I'll just stay here in my dark corner with my game engine and be happy.Yeah, okay. :)

Talking to some Garage Games insiders off-the-record it seems that they are and have been spending more money than making it, basically following a dot-com business model.
eh eh
was that you?
the insider I mean:)

Personally, I looked at the Conitec site first (most lists are in alphanumerical order) and even tried their demo, but TGE was so much better in many respects.

In my experience, 3DGS is mentioned on about the same number of resource and directory sites as Torque, although it tends not to crop up in forum conversations quite so often.Personally, I looked at the Conitec site first (most lists are in alphanumerical order) and even tried their demo, but TGE was so much better in many respects.

Secondly, what the hell is this double-standard?
I've used both 3DGS and Torque, and both are good engines. Personally, I use 3DGS because it is a much faster development pipeline for me to use, not having to peruse half a million lines of code. They are good in their own respects, and also bad in their own respects.

Reading this thread sure has given me one hell of a laugh. Talk about uptight and oversensitive. The comic was posted entirely out of humor and, as the poster stated, it was all in good fun and no offense was meant. To me, it was simply humorous because it depicted the ongoing Torque vs. A6 war and it's never ending mud-sligning. For those who have not seen the image, here is a link (I am a moderator over @ 3DGS, thus I can read the archived thread to retrieve it):

Quote:I guess we could make our own comic but I think it would look better then any game coming out of that craptastic engineYou get all mad about somebody posting something that disses your engine, and put them down for it, then go and do the same thing.

Quote:I am disgusted at the thought that some no name jerks would go and make a web comic claiming that Torque is a crappy game engine and how people who are slaving away day in and day out so that they can provide excelent tools at an extremely affordable rate should be punished for helping to make Torque a reality.Personally, I'd like to beating you with the baseball bat... The comic was posted only to be humorous; oh, that's right comics aren't supposed to be funny are they now? Dear god, take the stick out of your ass and take a laugh rather than scream and whelp whenever something comes in front of your bloody patriotism in this engine. Oh.. in case you didn't catch the joke this time either... I was kidding about the baseball bat...

1. Putting something into a comic format does not automatically make it funny nor humorous.
2. Running up to someone and saying "You've a f@cker. Oh, but no offense." does not get you off the hook.
3. How'd you expect the community to react to being put down?

Interesting... I've never been informed that Torque was at war with A6.

I had commented to some peers of mine that there would be someone who would defend this type of crap and garbage saying that its "all in good humor" and it certainly did not take long to have it arrive. You might see it as "humor" but in most common practices of a little thing called "society" it most definately isn't. Encouraging violence against someone, even if it is a very lame attempt at humor, is absolutely uncalled for and it is incredibly sad to see this type of stuff pop up in any community.
I can certainly understand that TGE guys won't get along with A6 guys (and vice versa), but honestly what good does it server to do stupid crap like this? I know that there are people here who certainly have bad things to say about A6 for whatever reason (just as I am sure some A6ers will about TGE), but I have never seen anyone here in the GG community go anywhere beyond a few personal jaded words to this sort of stuff. Its like openly talking about how many puppies you can punt over a football standard or stuffing kitten in a bag to drown them, sure someone might find this funny but there are a lot of people who will find this disturbing and very much uncalled for even if the intentions theoreticly harmless.
As for my "patriotism in this engine" as you call it, I wear my heart on my sleeve just as you do, but I guess that the "joke" wasn't leveled at people who you would consider friends never mind absolutely uncalled for regardless of the reason or intention so you just don't understand why I would type what I did when I called your community member an "ass wipe" and "no name jerk" and not see the "humor" here in what they have done.
As such I think its best if you just tell your guys to cool down and return to making games and we here will readily forget about this crap and return to same.

Thanks for your honest response ;). It is best to put this behind us, but the fact that this thread was even posted in response is troublesome. To the audience that it was intended, it was humorous and unharmful- it's when people from outside got a hold of it that a problem occured :). Needs to be more people in the industry like you that can at least argue their offence :p. Either way- looking at it from the perspective of how both sides can be sometimes, you've gotta admit it's damn funny then ;).. think of it like a editorial cartoon, beating the other side up then having your only argument be, "well.... well ... you engine sucks... so you deserved it" ;).-Rhuarc

I've really never seen the level of hostility described in this thread, and hope I never do. Maybe there are big flame wars on the A6 forums or on other independent sites. The GG forums are about making games and talking tech/art/music/design/etc., not engine flame wars. I've seen a lot of threads here discussing A6 vs. Torque, and the consensus is always that the person should choose the technology that will help them make the game they want to make, not that either company makes "bad engines."
I want to see people making the best games they possibly can, using the best technology available to them. That's why we sell Torque cheaply to indies. A6, BlitzBasic, and many other products also help enable that vision. I might think that Torque is the better technology (I'm biased :), but that doesn't mean I should hold any animosity towards the producers of A6 or the community that loves it...
Anyway, I agree with Daniel and Logan. Let's just move on with our lives.

To be fair, the guy who posted this thread has only been a member of the GG site for two weeks, and he gave little to no explanation. ("XD XD XD" can be taken many different ways. :)I've really never seen the level of hostility described in this thread, and hope I never do. I thougth that this comic was very funny, BUT I am NOT against Torque OR 3DGS. I use 3DGS but I am slowly been dragged towards Torque... I am very near buying Torque but I have not made my final desicion yet. I think that both Torque and 3DGS have their own strengths ( though Torque terrains are just INCREDIBLE ). So sorry to everyone. I didn't mean to post this as a flame thread.

I just found it to be horrendously unfunny, regardless of the engine involved. Maybe it's because I like the original comic, but I think that it was more like watching a bad comedian at open mic night. They try to sound humorous with the lamest jokes and fail miserably. At first you feel kind of sorry for them, and then you realize how horrid they are and just wish they'd shut up and get a job outside the comedy profession. Like a grave robber or mass murderer or an accountant. Something methodical, but without any attempt at humor.

I don't really find it funny either and I am a long time 3DGS user, now turned Torque user by the way. But I don't think there is anything to start a flame war about. I believe the whole point of it is like Dan said (Nice to see ya here btw :D ) that many times people will bash a engine without giving any reason why. If you really think about it it is a slam on 3dgs users really instead of Torque because many times over at the 3dgs discussion boards people will blindly attack an engine without any good arguments... Think what you want but I really don't think any insult was meant.

As an owner of both A6 and Torque (among many other engines as well), I don't really hold any grudges against any them - or I wouldn't have bought them in the first place. Over at 3dgs, there have been some pretty intense discussions regarding torque vs A6. It was merelly a humorous response to these discussions, and it's indended audience were the people who participated in that discussion.
One could also say that we're bashing ourselves for being so hostile towards other engines. But please quit jumping to defense when you don't even know the context of the joke. Both are great engines, no harm was intended.
