Shutting down the OpenGL display device...
These lines look like the errors. I don't know what cdrop and ipx are though.

I have had simular problems with the demo looking like that, And found nothing wrong (wll with my eyes anyhow lol). So what i did was a reboot of the pc and the problem seem to clear up and everything looked fine when i ran it again, May have been my use of opening and closing everything all day and the vid card was needing a new life for the day.

If you haven't properly set up a GUI, you'll get garbage like this. It's because there's nothing for the engine to draw to the screen.

Im reading that book to and im only a chapter ahead of you but i think you should make sure you set the splashscreen to the right dirrectory

Look for a file called console.log. Delete it. Run torque again. Find console.log again (should be recreated when you run torque). What does console.log say now?
