Realm Wars

Whatever happened to this?

I remember some really big ideas thrown around for it...now I don't see it on the GG main page even anymore.

Does it still exist? Still in development? Where can I find a download/more info on it?

Thanks :)

The Realm Wars site is http://realmwarsgame.com I think. I am pretty sure development has stopped (public notification has stopped).

I still find it useful.

EDIT: I checked and it is realmwarsgame.com.

Development of Realmwars has NOT stopped. Current development has been low key though. I spoke with the Team Lead for the project this week and they've been doing alot of cleanup work and updateing the codebase to the newest versions of Torque. The did mention possible dates of the next release, but those dates were off the record and I'm not able to share them here.

That is great to know.

I look forward to the next release, :P.

Sorry for my false statement.

A lot of work is happening behind the scenes which I cannot talk too much about at this time since I don't want to make any false promises. Here is some basic information for those of you who are curious:

It is great the Logan is keeping the project alive. When we tried the community method of creating a project, I think it was too early in our company's life. We did not have enough internal people to give it any time, and a lot of our tools and technologies were not quite ready. I still believe it would be a great thing to have a vibrant community project that a lot of people could contribute to, and hope to readdress it some day.

What about right now though ;-)

A GG's "sponsored" community project isn't possible at this time. That does not preclude the GG's community from starting a community project.

Things to think about if you go this route.

1. Protecting the TGE source code.
2. Having a solid design document and direction for the project.
3. Project team organization, who is the leader... etc.
4. Contributers need to do the things that need done... not what they want to do.

@Jeff

I totally agree that somewhere down the line it would be nice to have another community project. Although the RW community project didn't work out too well, I think we all learnt something from it that can benefit the next community project and secondly a lot of developers got a great bonus from having a working game example to compare stuff to or get a head start from.

@Labrat

If you like I can pass along some notes as to what I felt were the problems with the Realm Wars community project. I have them somewhere on my hard drive as part of a Realm Wars session that I did at IGC03.

Logan, That might be a good idea. You can catch me on IRC to get an address to send it to. Or just use the one in my profile.

For that matter it probably wouldn't hurt to flesh something out as a Community Project Guidelines type document.

Logan had some good slides that outlined the challenges last year. They are the same as any virtual team, just magified due to the nebulous nature of hte "community" project.

A smaller project would be more interesting.

Realm Wars is an FPS with all the issues and work going with it.

A simpler will funny idea could be interesting. Perhaps using TSE, so some artist can learn using shaders.

If there is a design doc and a list of what need to be done in code, gfx, sound, it can possibly be done.

I remember when I was working on RW that the amount of work was too scary and that pressure, even for a free game just wasn't motivating.

The game idea forum could be a good start... but GG employee launching the thing would be best imo...

I was not around when RW was developed by the GG community. I don't really know the main goal of its creation. So I would only guess, please correct me for inacuracy.

Realm Wars for me was a success that a community would finaly show the power of TGE as well as to make use of their collected knowledge. Its goal was to make known the ability of the engine as well as a training ground of the community.

It help me as well with references of some codes and ideas of structures.

I was surprised to hear RW project was still active. But now that I read that the codes will not be 'publicly released' makes me wonder of what goal of the second RW project would be?

Yet understandable that you'll be using "3rd party" enhancements. But my question remains...

What would be the goal of the second RW release now that the codes are 'compiled'?

On the other hand, Why not make it into a payed downloadable game like lore?
