Can't read the text

by Richard Gamel · in General Discussion · 12/14/2001 (4:07 am) · 7 replies

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I have a problem that is driving me crazy.

All of the text on the v12test.exe and tools is currupt or blocky. I'm sure. its a video card problem.
I have a a ATI RagePro.4 megs. I have tried to update drivers and I still have a problem.
I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem or if there was some solution.

Thanks
Richard

If by "blocky" you mean the the textures near water look jagged and the sky colors look kind of muddy, the problem is that your video card is set to 16 bit color. Change it to 32 bit color and the "problem" will go away.

The example program looks at the capabilities of your card when it starts, so if you go to the options menu and select Video you can see what it has picked - if the number of colors is 16 you can click on it with the mouse and a drop down box will appear. 16 and 32 will be the valid choices if your card supports it. Click on 32 and select Apply. That should do it.

Please note that some people have had problems with their cards when they knew that it would do 32 bit color but the engine would not provide it. This is almost always due to not having the latest drivers.

This can also effect the appearance of text characters. Other possibilities are choice of font and the selection of character smoothing in your Display Properties -> Effects Settings

Hi David,

Thanks for responding

I'm pretty talking about the the gui menus. The demo itself runs Ok,
once I load and run a level or map or whatever.

All I see on the Gui are black rectangles for fonts or type. Like where its
supposed to say mission and exit. I can't even guess what the rest of the buttons say.

I am running the demo in 800*600 16 bit. Its the only combination I can use
without it exiting at startup. I did a try 800*600 32 but it locked up my computer..
I also tried to start by forcing dx and opengl but nothing makes any difference even after
changing video card drivers. a dozen times.

As you suggested, I changed smoothing and aslo adjusted hardware acceleration.
No changes there. I tried like 20 differents fonts also.they all show up as black blocks , or don't show at all.

Thanks for your help.

I'm afraid that it may be the card, but just for the record - what do you have? That way if others show up later with the problem others will know what to say. Also maybe there is a workaround that someone else has stumbled on. For example there are special rules governing Voodoo cards.
The other thing I forgot to ask is did you go to the docs file and check the compatibility table? It's in torque/doc/install/video.html
If it's there then somebody got it working somehow...

Thanks Simon & David.

Its just a cheap built in the board ATI Rage PRO 4 megs. It looks like it is time to get a new card.
I'll just have to wait awhile. A little short on money right now. It looks like tribes 2 does not support it either.
I was just hoping there would be a cheaper sollution or perhaps a work-around.

Thanks for all the responses.

Trade you a video card for some background artwork? I have a couple extra 16MB Nvidia TNT2 cards that I'm looking to leverage into some decent artwork as backgrounds for my game screens. If you are interested e-mail me.
