This is probally a stupid request but...

by Brad Phillips · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 03/07/2005 (2:38 pm) · 23 replies

Okay, here's the deal.

I have a fairly extensive design document for a game I plan on making in the future when I acutally have a job (only 16 a.t.m.). Okay, what I want is for someone (preferably a long standing member here) to like read it and what not. I just sorta wrote and organized it the way it felt right to me, but that doesn't mean anything since it's the first one I've done this extensivly.

Like I said, probally a really dumb request, but if anyone would like to help me, I would very much appreciate it.

thanks.

Having a job means you have less time on your hands. If you have time now, then now is the time to get started. Grab a copy of the Torque demo and start scripting.

That is more likely to happen if you post a link to it. Find a website to put it on (your internet service provider probably provides a bit of free web space) and tell us the address. You could also post the document on Garage Games directly by pasting it into a .plan. Until you figure out how to do one of those, consider just putting a summary in this thread.

You see I don't have time though, I'm super busy with school (I'm in all honors crap) and I have a job, I meant a job in the game industry. I have no free time at all to do this stuff.

Post a link to it, I'll give you any feedback I can.

I would prefer to send it via email. What I'm looking for is anything that I would need to do to make it more professional, more presentable, more complete, understandable, etc.

Seeing as there isn't really a standard game design document format or anything, It's really hard to just make up your first one. I just need someone with some experience to give me feedback since it's hard to get advice from people at school who don't know the powerbutton from the enter button on a PC.

So Niko, I hope you don't mind, but I emailed it to you. James, you don't have an email listed, so I can't.

I got it yesterday and started reading it. It looks like a great idea. You have a lot of deatail (130 pages) while most design documents that i've seen only have 50-ish. I'll try to finish reading it over the weekend and email you.

Game design documents are not as useful as you might imagine at pitching an idea.

A prototype is required.

Paul, I am aware of this, but it is still nice *looking* on a resume to say I have a professional quality game design document by age 16. Plus the experience gained from compling one is emense. From where it is now to the 10 page document it started as is amazing. I got a lot of the orriginal help from a guy off of GG, but we lost contact of eachother, and I haven't worked on it as much since. I picked it back up a month ago, did a lot of revisions, editing, etc. I would love to prototype it, but I can't program, and don't really want to learn how to program beyond a basic level. I am much much more interested in the creative side of design, storywriting, and concept art than I am of the nuts and bolts programming end.

And Niko, if you haven't skimmed it, well over half of that document is the weapon lists, which aren't near as important if you don't want to read all of those.

If you need any help programming, I would like to help. From what I've read of it, this game sounds like it would be fun.

Draw some concepts to go with the document, then, as you're interested in concept art. If you can get images of the things mentioned in the document, it'll look almost as impressive as a prototype. Words are easy, that's why pictures are worth a thousand of them.

Matt, I have over 100 pieces of work for the game, all original. I however lack a scaner, so I can't host them or I would. I did some work in MS paint (I know... it's weak) for the menu screen, and it's low quality but still decent. The artwork we (me and my freind) did is rough, and nothing more than line drawings with a few exceptions that I shaded. Nothing special, but it gets a lot of ideas on paper.

Niko, So far this is a hobby, I would love to take it to the next steps, but it would be really hard to do via email/GG message boards. I'm very open to trying, in fact I would love it. If you really want to we would need to find a modelor, I would need a way to transpher photos to him (I could use the schools scaner, I'm in tight with the PC guys at school) and it would take ages to program how detailed this game is with just you working. If you want to though, I'm definatly in.

Brad,

Could I get a copy of the design document? I wouldn't mind reading it through and seeing if I could do anything for you.

Your starting at the right age and taking the right steps, if the design is as impressive as people say you'll be further ahead than most people are.

If you can't get to a scanner then use a camera, my scanner broke so I use my camera and trace out the lines in Photoshop. A bit tedious but the drawing turns out quite nicely.

I have a friend who can do most of the 3D modeling. He's pretty good.

You're right, it would be hard to do through only email and GG forums, but I think we should try it. This could be a lot of fun.

I'm all for it man. How much of the document have you read, and do you have any questions about it or the game?

Brad - Not that any of these guys would do it, but your sending out your doc to a lot of people that you do not know. In an industry where tried and true ideas are ramped and new ideas are golden, I would suggest you don't take a chance of someone "stealing" your idea and register it at the Writers Guild of America.

www.wga.org/

It only cost 20$ and can protect you from unlawful use of your ideas if the time comes.

Just a thought...

Take care,
