Looking for a tetris clone or tutorial

Hi all,

I'm working on this dr mario/ tetris derivative however Im running into a problem with regards to destroying the like colored blocks after so many are aligned horizontally and vertically. I wanted to know if there were any tutorials on a simple tetris game out there that could possibly help me solve my problem. Any help would be greatly appreciatred. Thanks in advance.
