Illusion sprites?

by Mayor McCheese · in Torque Game Builder · 03/02/2005 (4:35 pm) · 3 replies

Heyaz,

I was just wondering about the legitness of the presets in the particle editor. They seem to be the same exact source sprites and presets from Illusion (which is now built into Combustion) so did you guys get permission to use the exact source images? Also is it possible to import things directly from Illusion if I make my particles in there?

Danke,
Juan

@Juan: I used particle illusion, max payne and other particle editors during my research-phase of T2Ds particle-editor so see the kind of features that are generally available. Most of the particle sprites that come in the examples came from various web-sites (some from people using particle-illusion) on the internet and were slightly modified by me. All were apparently public domain. I'll go through and check though immediately and I'll certainly remove any that are. I did remove some that were blatently obviously from particle illusion although I don't know how exactly they achieved the export.

Doesn't particle illusion store stuff in its own format? How would they actually achieve this? Perhaps they rendered a single particle and did a screen grab.

As for the presets, yes, effects like the teleporter were based upon a similar effect in particle illusion but were done by hand in T2Ds editor, not imported from Particle Illusion (can you export from this product?).

There's a possibility that some of that art may originate from that product (not by me though) and if you could point out the individual images, I'll cross-check them and remove them immediately.

Most of those effects were done in the early days of T2Ds development.

Really appreciate the heads-up on this.

Heyaz Melv,

There is a option to "export shape" from Illusion. So that will save out the image that is used as the source for the particle with alphas. The two effects that come to mind are steam and the jet. They remind me of emmiter libraries that you could get with Illusion 1.0. The only thing is that I dont remember if they were stock or were user libraries. The Matrix effect I remember the tutorial on the web that it came from. Heh.

Ah cool. Well I didnt know if you reverse engineered the library files or if you wrote your own for T2D. I dont have a need for creating stuff in Illusion to export because I like your editor. The only thing that would be nice would be a slider or a way to scrub the value up and down for a field. It would make creating particle systems a lot more interactive. There isnt a export per say except for creating a new library and having a single effect in that library.

No worries about the heads up. I like where T2D is going and I want to make sure it sticks around. ^_^

Juan

@Juan: Really appreciate you mentioning this. I've had a look at some of the particles and they look too similar for comfort. I'll change these very soon and remove them from the product.

Lots of improvement to be made, particularly to the particle editor, especially with relation to the key editing.
