Poll: current # of game ideas?

by Joshua Dallman · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 02/27/2005 (7:29 pm) · 29 replies

So I'm really curious, for those who keep track of their numbers (there are a lot of programmers on this site afterall who like to do things like keep track of numbers):

What is the current number of game ideas you have?
(Not including bad ones?)

6 ideas, unfortunately my lack of skill in the world of 3d art prevents me from making them come to life. Oh yea and then there's the thing of KNOWING how to code, profecently, then the problem of knowing how to spell. Did I mention not having a clu..... nevermind

I have directories and directories and files and files full of ideas.

But right now I'm concentrating on one.

Over 25 written down to choose from when I roll over onto the next product, but I can't make a 1 hour drive to the nearest large city on a shopping trip without driving past half a dozen new ones.

Glad to hear a high number with you too, kevin. I thought I was pushing it with 32, and that's after deleting a whole bunch, but I think I'm not alone :)

I don't actually keep a whole list. I've created approxiamately 11 games that were released at some point. I've come up with many more ideas and prototypes than that but I haven't written them all down. Currently I have a pad with 4 concepts written down ... then I also have prototyped to playable form 8 games in the last year not including anything I released. I cannot actually tell you how many game ideas I have ... it's inifinite ;)

I have 4.... All detailed design docs and protoyped...

Hunting Extreme - (3rd person Animal hunting - you're a Cheetah and hunt for
survival and to become the leader of the pack)... Reason for canning = money
for cheetah model ... so i had a box running around attacking other boxes...

South park - Cartmans Revenge : Still waiting for all those people who
promised cellshading resources :-(

Death Race - Think Death Rally 3D... I know i'll get flamed for this... But personally I think the Vehicle Code is up to @$%... So car games are out if you're not a pro with engine code.

Unnamed - Current project still protoyping... Melee/Combo fighting in
Manga setting. Will release melee upgrades... with demo to hopefully get some other people involved in project.

Currently 4 ideas. Working on 1 full-time and occasionally messing around with the second.

I have 3 with 2 that are quite fleshed out, 1 near complete. Just trying to decided which is best for a first project. :)

4 ideas for the moment. All of them is still in the design stage. (I want to try and make some sort of design before I start coding. Never done that before...)

The trick is to not jump between projects, but choose one and finish it. Really finish it.

@Kevin

Unless it is boring and you find it doesn't work. In which case the trick is to dump it and cut your losses ;o)

Or unless you find it to expensive...

Or unless all of a sudden a group of people release a dedicated 2D engine that looks 'teh awesome' and your first project seems to pale in comparison.

I'm at around 2 dozen. Most of them are kinda half-baked, with about two paragraphs' worth of of explanation and some drawings. There is one which is partially prototyped from a GID, one that is currently in production, and another one in detailed design stage waiting for after the current project is done.

I've also found that ideas are a lot easier to come by now than they were a year ago. It seems like it's a skill that just takes practice... I seem to be stumbling across a "really cool idea" every week now. These are ideas that ARE feasable to do for an indie game... certainly I've got another couple dozen "high concept" ideas for games that would take at least a couple million and a talented team to product.

For me, I'm only going to count the games that I actually hope to create sometime. There's 5 in that list right away, and one of those is almost completely prototyped. Then there are at least a dozen in the list that I don't plan to create, or that I have attempted to create, only to discard.

About 3.4 billion roughly... I'm going to concentrate on one for now though, Torque is juicy!

This subject was the entire point of my presentation at IGC 2004. Anybody making games should have more ideas than they could EVER complete.

I don't understand this at all. How many song ideas do musicians have before they complete an album. How many ideas doea a painter have before he puts the brush to canvas.

4 3D and 3 2D. Three of the four 3D are in game design mode, the fourth was a work in progress using another system. Since I purchased Torque a couple of months ago, I've put that project on hold till I get relatively familiar with TGE, then start over.

All 3 of the 2D's were being developed under yet another system, but now that T2D is out (and purchased) I'm backing off these projects to look at that. These GarageGames guys just keep changing my mind for me.

Lots more ideas, but all down the road possibilities.

@Jeff: Funny you should use the music analogy. I do background music for various projects (non-midi), and probably have close to a hundred pieces started. Working on one project, get an idea for another, get down enough to remember it later, and try to get back to the original work. Once in a while I browse through some of the pieces and find one that's just too good not to finish. Probably be the same with games...

Just added it up...I've got about 77 different game ideas documented currently...and I am sure I am forgetting a few. Some I will *never* complete, some are a long shot, and others are only half-formed.

Thus far I have prototyped and/or coded against about 10 of them so I have a *long* ways to go =)
