2d game development ?

by Joel · in Torque Game Engine · 02/14/2005 (1:17 pm) · 15 replies

I know that there is currently work underway at gg to develop a 2d gaming engine, though i'm not sure how far way that is until release. I did notice on the website that there are several 2d games available that were built using TGE. I was wondering if anyone had any idea on the difficulty of doing this with TGE? Is it a lot of work to get something like this going, i know c/c++ but probably not enough to be able to completely overhaul everything to make it work for 2d.

Any thoughts?

Word on the street is that Torque2d is only weeks from release, so that's definitely your best bet. :)

@Joel: Jason is correct; T2D will be hitting the streets very, very, very, very soon.

I hope so. I've been prototyping in BlitzMax. I'd really rather use T2D.

@Melv/Jason : thanks for the post. I am curious about the licensing, it seems based upon comments by various GG people that access to the source/licensing is included as part of a TGE license, is this correct?

I'm wondering if I should just go ahead and buy a copy of the Torque license to get my feet wet with all of the stuff available, or if I am wasting my money buying a TGE license and will have to buy a different license when t2d finally ships?

No. You don't get T2D when you purchase TGE, it's a separate product. T2D uses TGE (T3D) for its platform, audio, GUI support. Being as we're releasing full source code for T2D (woot!), you'll also be getting a healthly proportion of the T3D codebase as well. It's kind of the other way around to what you said.

Unfortunately, I cannot provide any more details at this point but when I say very, very, very, very soon, I mean rather, quite, nearly, absolutely, critically, practically, very soon!!!

Worth holding-off for a little time for an announcement if you're at all unsure.

Any ideas on the pricing? It seems very tasty...lol just wandering if my wallet can handle it though...

Wait. So does that mean TGE owners won't get any sort of special pricing on T2D? Because I was under the (hopefully-not-mistaken) impression that there would be some sort of pricing plan along those lines.

T2D is going to be a bargain at any price, dude. ^_^

I'm not saying that at all. I really don't want to get dragged into a discussion about stuff that I really shouldn't be talking about. I'll direct Jay/Josh here to answer that one for you.

Me techie, not sales guy!

I can reassure you by saying there are no stings in the tail like this, please don't worry. :)

Melv, don't get me wrong. Not that I doubt that T2D is going to be worth the price, I was just trying to clear up any questions in my head. :) My brain may just have been forming links that weren't there in assuming that the EA release was going to be along similar price plans as TSE.

I believe from previous discussions, T2D will be released as a stand-alone product that is accessible through TorqueScript so that games can be developed without having to be a TGE licensee. And then, there's the source license, which I'm assuming would be available to TGE owners like the Lighting Pack, TSE, and the RTS Kit.

Either way, it looks to be an amazing product. I've been nothing but impressed and intrigued from the first day Melv posted a little plan talking about extending out FX to see if he could make a handy little 2D layer. Then it grew by leaps and bounds.

@Melv: When you say:

do you mean "almost-at-any-second-and-that-isn't-even-close-enough" soon
or do you mean
"slap-me-silly-and-drop-down-dead-like-a-fried-canary" kind of soon ??

I'm just wondering since you were a bit hazy back there .. :)

@Teck: No problem. :)

@David: Thanks!

@Jorgen: Hmm, I believe the second one sounds more interesting. 8)

Really guys, I can answer the tech, the rest I shouldn't really discuss. It'll all be announced (*try hard not to say soon*) pronto. ;)

You have to believe me that it's killing me but my pain will soon end. Wooot!
