Anyone with tips for waterfalls
i guess i need to learn the ins and outs of the particle scripts used...
i have stretched my map (terrain blocksize 16) for a much bigger map...
however i am now limited in designing mountains etc due to the blockiness of the terrain...
my only hope is the smooth tool i guess...
also is it possible to create platforms mid-air? for example...
clouds that you cud walk on...
thanks to all who have helped me before by the way and anyone who can help me in future developments...

I made a waterfall out of particles a while back, came out pretty nice. Just needed a water emitter, spray emitter, and mist emiiter. Put it all together and it looked really nice! :D Was a bit of a performance hit when your inside it, but still looked really cool

1. Planes can give you a nice effect with little performance hit if done right. Stretch a large plane across a cliff (for a nice effect, you can curve the cliffe, and hence the plane). Get some nice animated water textures, and pan them vertically.
2. Particles can be more resource intensive, but they can also give you some fantastic effects with some observation and experimentation. A single particle emitter at the top of a cliff (at the mouth of a small river or brook) can give you a great looking waterfall with the right spread. And a niagara falls-type waterfall can be done with a bunch of emitters lining your cliff (this can be pretty graphic-intensive, though).
3. Combine the two techniques. Have a waterfall made up of overlapping planes, but then place some particle emitters at the base of the waterfall to simulate the spray and mist.
I'm sure others can think of some more techniques, but that should give you a bit of a head start.
ps. For some nice examples of waterfalls, check out some screenshots of Far Cry. Or better yet, if you have the game, fire up the map editor and study them in-depth.

Waterfalls can be approached a number of ways, depending on a number of factors. The two most basic techniques would be to use particles, or planes with animated textures.1. If yes, how do you do it, and how do you
get an animated texture and put it on that plane
and get it put into the torque game engine?

Can you make planes in Quark 6.4?If yes, how do you do it, and how do you
get an animated texture and put it on that plane
and get it put into the torque game engine?

With all due respect, what does this have to do with waterfalls and terrain? There are art specific forums, including one for Quark, so I would suggest you post your question there.

He says you can make waterfalls with planes.
I want to know if you can make them in quark.
And I want also to know how to get it into torque.
I TOO am trying to create an animated waterfall and need help.

Ahh, sorry--I thought you meant planes as in "airplanes"! I apologize.

And put a ifl texture animation on it.

Do the waterfall plane in your favorite 3d program max, blender, milkshape or what ever. And put a ifl texture animation on it.

Don't try to make a waterfall in quark if you can help it. :) I would do it in max/maya/whatever and place it with the world editor.
