OpenGL Image Lighting?

Hi,
I've been absent from the game-programming scene for a while,
but I'm trying to pick up on it again...
My first project will be to continue BunnyHump 3D,
and the main thing I want in that is cartoon-like graphics...
For lighting, I found out that the best way to make it look cartooney is to have a sphere map, and making a cartooney shadowed ball in Paintshop...
However, some textures need some more variance that just one color,
and if you sphere map that, the texture will look exactly the same from all angles...
Does anyone know of a way to create a model for Torque with a normal texture, and an alpha transparent picture on top of it as a spheremap?
or would anyone know how to program this in the engine ?
Thank you,
TB
