Manga style story telling

Hi all,

I'm working on this game idea for an RTS/Action game with a strong story. Since I wanted to tell a story i needed dialogue but i can't afford to pay actors or make these highly animated scenes so heres what i came up with.

to set up the premise of the game, you are following the story of a child who is writing a manga about giant robots. He just happens to be bored so he creates the story that the player will follow.

The characters in this world use these giant robots known as armors to stop a war from escalating between a seemingly peaceful race of aliens and the native humans.

During the single player game, the cut scenes switch between kid and his friend (who shows up later) drawing the comic and the action of the comic itself. All of the cutscenes are set up as Manga panels. (similar to max payne) The only two voices are the two children. They voice all the characters as the children imagine the world they are drawing.

The decision to use the two children to tell the story was two fold. on one had it offered a fresh new story within a story type that hasn't been done in two many games. and on the other it cuts down on the amount of voice 'talent' needed for the game. A friend and I can do the voice work ourselves.

So do you guys and gals think this is a good idea? Will the Manga cutscenes be compelling enough to carry the story. Also are there any video play back options for mac and linux. i'd like to produce this game on all 3 major pc platforms. so i need to know what video play back options i have.

Thanks guys. Let me know if you need more info. I know this is pretty vague. I didn't want to post the full design doc or story doc but if you want to see them let me know.

In considering dialogue and cutscenes for your game, you should consider how you want to distribute it too. If you're doing downloadable distro, all that rich audio/video will be a pain to download, especially for a demo. This is what made me re-think the wisdom of rich cutscenes, even though I have some friends that are into theater and could have tapped them for cheap.

Paul Dana's "Bit Shifters" is an indie game that uses comic book style panels to tell a story, and from what I understand they were really well received.

Got a url for that? and what about audio compression?

It could be done very well. In fact, you don't even need to have them be movies. They can be animated GUI elements. You actually don't even need voice, though if you did have voices, it would be fun to have them move from the kid's voices to an adult over-lay for the character voices. But again, that leads to voice-work. But to keep a consistently manga feel, articulating screams and sound effects over a soundtrack rather than having voice can be very effective. This has been done to great effect in a number of comic and manga-based games.

If you have a Dreamcast, take a look at Toy Commander's opening movie. It is one of the best examples of illustrating a child's imagination into a game that I've seen. The game was fun, too, albeit clunky. If you're into import titles, Comic Party would be a fun pick for you as well. So would the Sakura Taisen games.

Project: Bit Shifter Although the link to the web site appears to be down.

I downloaded the Alpha and it was fun. I agree with the statement about the comic book feel being good.

@ David

So you're saying that I can just use Guis and have still cutscenes with text and have screams and other soundeffects for the normal mode? rts/action gameplay

Whenever you would "need" a movie, all you're really have to do is create an animated GUI for the movie footage. Sliding panels and using them with a combination of environmental sound effects could be extremely effective. Especially since you have a manga theme. To get an idea of what I'm thinking, because I'm explaining it badly, go rent XIII. Now, look at the way your actions would pop up comic panels in XIII. Think about how to implement that with the story elements in your RTS/action title. While I can't say that XIII was that fun of a game, it's art stylings were top notch.

I'm explaining myself badly. I'll try to think of a better way to explain it.

I understand. I was thinking about using some of the style that XIII used. you know like the panels and even some words they used to illustrate sound effects. So im defenitaly gonna check it out. when i have mock ups ready i'll show them

Okay so as an aside to this discussion i've decided to go completely with the manga art style. Therefore all the art for the game will be black and white with different hand drawn shading techniques. So my question is.. is it possible to fake programmed shading with texture maps? I'm still gonna try if anything Ill just go with boring old nromal 3d shading and regular full color texture maps. but i really want it to feel like you're in a manga comic.

Gray scale, and look at brush shaping and shading techniques within the GiMP filters to learn how they accomplished some of their effects. Then figure out how you're rendering your normal shadow maps and replace them with a filtered version. It's an extremely high-end version of the concept, but then I've never thought about how to do something like this. I love the idea, though.

This sounds like a really cool idea.Even though I don't know hardly anything about making a game yet.I just now got a computer I downloaded blender 3D,it's a pretty cool program. I always have liked a game with a very good story.I wanna make games with very good and deep stories in them. That would be cool to feel like you are in a manga, cause I really like mangas and animes.I hope your game turns out awesome! ^_^

Nah we're not talking about your grammar.

I have a basic story plot line fleshed out. I would like feedback with regard to plot holes or inconsistencies that you may find in the story. Here is a brief summary of what I was trying to communicate: Two children are actually creating the comic book world in which the game takes place. The world has been restored by a race of benevolent aliens who now live on earth. A strange group is attempting to drive the aliens from earth. A group known as the Guardians are callled in to stop the attacks. Let me know if these ideas come across in what is presented. Thanks

Neil and the Guardian unit set out immediately to reach the kingdom and stop the bandit invasion. Because the bandits have air superiority the Guardians have to go in over the ground.
