Old English Style Village

by John Spivey · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 01/27/2005 (9:45 pm) · 27 replies

This is gonna be my old english line. It was inspired by an old architecture book i stumbled on. So far I am very pleased. I am having some serious light leaking though. Will have to work on that and i have not done the decor yet but here it is. I am pleased with it thus far. I think the colors look good together. I plan on keeping the same colors/theme for the structures in the village i am making. The textures used look ok?

It's lovely- only thing I'd work on a bit more are textures- especially wood. Otherwise then that it's great.

@John: Are you using TGERad? The radiosity lighting might help with the wierdness of the corners (and well look better in general than plain ambient). Of course it might suffer from the same problem, but will still be pretty.

Im not familiar with TGERad. I have no idea what that is. However there are no lights in the building as of yet. I figured i needed to get rid of the leaks and figure out how to decorate it before i can do that. On the third floor there is a big leak. I need to figure out how to glue brushes together. Because of the angle of the roof there is a mitered joint and i have read that those leak bad. So i am open to suggestions there.

Quark I'm assuming ? Ctrl + T to tag a face... Ctrl + G after selecting another face to glue it to that one

Very nice! My only problem with it is the textures. Try working on getting them to look less muddy.

@Matthew. Thanks for that info that might be what i have been missing. I have not glued anything together and untill a few days ago i didnt even know it exsisted. Thanks for the tip.

Yeah textures are killing me. I dont have photoshop to make what i need so i make due with Image Composer to edit my stuff. Dont have the cash to get PS Elements let alone the full version.

Will elements be enough to make what i want or will i really need to get the full version?

Elements should be plenty to get you started. Only a few more advanced features are left out of it.

Hehe nope but my wife is a teacher =P

quick question on glueing. If i select an edge does it automatically glue it to whatever brush its connected to?

Well here is the (for the most part) finished product. There had to be some changes made due to some portal problems but i am for the most part pleased with the look. Go here to see the progression of this project. It was an emmense learning experiance. The trees are not part of the model and are just some flavor to show off the end result. I would like to thank Matthew Jones for providing the trees in the freebies section. Here are the pics.

The cemetary you see in the backround is another model i built.

Hey John, these are looking really good. What are you planning on doing next? More in the same style?

Yes, will be building enough models to build a small village. There will be various types of structures, houses, pub, church, stuff like that. But also there will be other various "fluff" type items. For example.....

usera.imagecave.com/jbsss/modules.JPG
If you look there is a difernt style entrance now. That is not part of the structure. Totally diferent .dif. There will be many of those so that you can "semi" customize the buildings if you want. The art piece in the middle is also a diferent .dif. So if you wanted you could put a tree in there or another piece of "art". I hope to have about a dozen diferent pieces of art. About a dozen diferent entrances and about a dozen diferent buildings to chose from. Then when i get ok at photoshop, I just ordered the essentials, i will be making diferent texture packages so that the buildings dont all have to be that white'ish brown and it lets the game builder decide what they wanna do. I will also be including decorated versions of the same models. There will be one cleared out and one of the same with knick-knacks in it.

I am learning new tricks almost daily so it will require a good going over before i say this little "pack" is done. But i think this is gonna turn out pretty decent for someone that doesnt feel like making all this stuff for thier project.

Who knows if i can save up the cash i might just get the new engine shader and really make this bad boy shine. Textures are really my weak point right now. I am sure there are many places i need work but when i get more stuff together i want the "pro's" here to take a look at my stuff.
