Hi everybody,
I read an article by Steve Pavlina on the indie game dev biz in general. if you are interested here is the site....
http://www.dexterity.com/articles/
anywho in one article on market research steve talks about how you should really do market research before you even begin your game. the article mentions things like finding your audienece finding a niche that is not being satisfied. .. etc.
So my question is do any of you developers do market research before you start product development or do you throw caution to the wind.?
And if you have done market research how important have you found it to be to your final project?
I'm asking this because i'm starting my own game dev studio. And I belive in the game that i'm about to produce but i'm all for listening to others to hear thier experiences. I would like to raise capital anyway i can so i can do this full time. i just picked up a book about developing advergames.
Has anyone tried to produce advergames? And if so how sucessful have you been?

Kind of interesting. They provide an SDK, but I don't know how much work it is to integrate it, say, into Torque.

I haven't actually done any advertising in-game yet, but there's a company that integrates advertising into game engines...www.massiveincorporated.com/

I don't thin i'd be using the torque engne. it would oprobbly be flash gmes for the manufacturer. this is jsust an idea i'm towing with. I was mainly interested to know if anyone knew how to go about approaching potential clients to make 'advergames' for them

I've been doing a bit of the other kind of Advergaming. Incorporating games into a company's advertising campaign. Usually these are mobile phone games though, as PC game development would usually take too big a chunk out of the advertising budget.

Why would you need a Commericial License for advergaming? A game is still a game even if you include coke cans or starbucks coffee mugs isn't it?I've been doing a bit of the other kind of Advergaming. What you do is exactly what i was refering too i probably didn't make it that clear. But how exactly did you get started with that? did you approach the comapnies with a portfolio? did you just set up shop. I'm interested in learing how to get started.

I think the main idea of advergaming is licensed gaming for a company (say, making Pepsiman or The Spot) rather than simple product placement. I think it's like being hired by a large publisher. If you have that kind of money behind you, you can afford the commercial license or negotiate it (which would be trivial with the new cost of the commercial license).

I guess I got into Indie game dev. for the fun of it and I still get kind of queasy when someone mentions that I should do marketting and try to be commercial.
I still have a lot of business growing up to do I guess!

as far as advergaming goes you're right you have to pay for the commercial lisence which woouldnt be too bad if i had a contract with some comapny but i still wonder how to get my name out there with companies that may be interested in advergames for thier products.

I thought the article was interesting but i've got do it now on the brain so my market research was largely hey i want to play this kind of game. i havent seen it so i'll make it. thats pretty much what i've done. and although im not deep into the throes of development i dont think i'd change my idea to get more sales. unless its minor changes.as far as advergaming goes you're right you have to pay for the commercial lisence which woouldnt be too bad if i had a contract with some comapny but i still wonder how to get my name out there with companies that may be interested in advergames for thier products.
