IGC 2005 Dates?
by Jeff Leigh · in General Discussion · 01/19/2005 (9:23 pm) · 70 replies
I know this might be a bit early for some to be thinking about but are there any tentative dates (month? dates?) for IGC 2005?
I've got several customers that are targeting the October time frame for project deliverables and I have influence on those targets to clear the way for my going to IGC this year if I can ball park some dates.

You buy the tickets through this gg.com website, so any form of payment that gg.com accepts you can also use to get the tickets.

Like maybe "Indies do it with passion".
Here are some good ones: www.dkgoodman.com/doitm-r.html

@Amanda, the $150 is per person, but it's well worth it for the information and networking you get to do when you're there.

Considering that it sells out every year with well over 200+ people from speakers, vertern game developers, hobbiests and even students I would have to say that a lot of people can afford the $150 ticket and find it a very rewarding experiance as well.
From my personal experiances its quite a steal of a deal and well worth every cent.

That may be true, guys. But I'm driving from sunny southern California. I don't know how many people are tripping from elsewhere in the States, but I have to add car rental, lodging, food, and when no one is speaking, entertainment to the plate as well. (It gets quite boring spending your nights in a hotel)

And for the record, based on historical notes over the last couple of years, my understanding is that GG never even breaks even on IGC--they wind up dumping a lot of cash into the event, bless their hearts!

@Amanda: Hehe..if there is anything you won't have to worry about, it's being bored at IGC. Your worst worry is going to be how to pay attention during the show with the massive hangovers you'll have every day!And for the record, based on historical notes over the last couple of years, my understanding is that GG never even breaks even on IGC--they wind up dumping a lot of cash into the event, bless their hearts!

There's usually people gaming in the show-off center until we kick people out at like 1am. Chilling in a hotel really isn't on the itnerary for IGC usually.

For myself (and I'm not even the furthest away by a long-shot), I add airfare coming from NYC to the event. Trust me, once you go and experience just how many connections you make, you'll want to go every year (and in my case for last year, kick yourself if you miss it).
It is a great opportunity to go and meet people, and you'll be surprised at how many people say "so you're so and so...". The GG crew are awesome, the event is awesome, and you will definitely be glad you came. Honestly, I go to the monthly IGDA meetings here in NYC, and they just don't compare to getting into a place like IGC and meeting with people that are as talented as the people that show up.
And if you do go, I suggest getting there a day or two early, as some people do to catch up with each other and talk tech before the show begins.

As Pat said, there's plenty to do. In 2003, I remember spending every night in a bar, and the hotel room was just for sleeping and dressing for the next day, haha. For myself (and I'm not even the furthest away by a long-shot), I add airfare coming from NYC to the event. Like Pat said, usually people have to get booted, or else it'd never close. :)

Entertainment at IGC is the least of the things you should worry about, there is an ongoing lan party, live music, a bar inside the conference hall, and tons of conversation, demos, etc.Like Pat said, usually people have to get booted, or else it'd never close. :)

People come from all over the world for this: Canada, Europe and elsewhere. $150 is a bargain and only a small part of the overall cost. And don't forget that it includes the daytime meal and a couple of drink tickets and all of the sessions and events. (Of course this is all assuming that this year will be the same as previous years).
My personal take on it is $150 is nothing and they really should be charging more to cover themselves. Have you seen the cost to attend sessions at the GDC?

How does GG feel about a person demo-ing, not selling gambling games. Just to show proespective customers what we have up our sleeves. (I know that in some places, you need a licence to gamble, (hopefully none of that will be going on), and some place just outright don't want to deal with it. But it doesn't hurt to ask?

I doubt that there would be much that they could update at this point aside from a potential date and location. Speakers are not confirmed, session lists are not ready and an itinerary is not planned. Never mind the fact that the marketing scheme for this years IGC has yet to be defined, so you will just have to be very very patient and wait until its actually time to update the IGC site.
As for Seattle, its a good few hours, 6 I think, less if you fly (which is very affordable for Western Canadians).

No cost to demo a product (no booths just a lan center). There normally isn't a lot of selling occurring...should probably contact GG directly on that one.
The conference is Oct 7-9...which means 3 days.
Final registration date should be a few weeks before or so.
You can take a look at the information from last year:
