Plans for RPG starter pack?

Question for anyone (especially GG staff): are there any plans for an RPG starter pack? I hope that I didn't miss the answer to this in another post...

Turn based vs. Real time is an RTS choice as well.
Perhaps there shouldn't be an RPG starter kit, but a loose collection of plugins that could be used to build the basic systems of various types of games. Then have a "Morrowind-style RPG Collection" or whatever, that gives some of those plugins at once.
Many RPGs will have both levels and skills, and both stats and inventory. Any game needs a camera system of some sort.
Yes, these could be programmed for each individual game, however why reinvent the wheel?

I think I got dropped from the MMORPG Starter Kit email thread?
Last I heard we were waiting for hosting resources to upload to.
Or was that Josh Ritter?
Anyways, it seems by the time the MMORPG Starter comes out, I'll be in beta with my own game.
I'm wagering Dreamer will be the first to finish and I have no wish to hack my game into an add-on pack.
If anyone has serious network/database/security MMORPG related questions I'm willing to give advice and share code freely.
I'm still working on my C, but client/server systems are nothing new to me. :)

Building a RPG Start Kit with a generic system is a waste of time as most would simply drop the system. RTS and FPS are more structured and standardized thus allowing a fairly complete system for a starter pack to be created. What I would like to see is not a RPG Starter Kit, rather a RPG Feature Collection containing an array of plugin features (objects) that can be used with modification in the RPGs and the rule system.
One particular feature I would love to see is a complex camera system, that allows in addition to the current switching between 1st and 3rd person the following:
floating camera detached from any player object (mainly for DMs to get see the larger scene)
controllable foreground objects removal ( can simply be based on viewing depth)
character to character view switching per player (familiar/animal companion and PC)
The Single-Character can be treated as an extreme case of a Mult-member player group, with number of members set to 1 per player (excluding the DM of course), thus there should only be one code base to support Multi-member player group.
Jay has listed a few useful features though both types of a feature should be provided. Hybrids between the 2 types of a feature can be done by the RPG developer, merging the code from both of the provided types to his/her liking.
Well, it has been a while, about 6 months. What is the progress so far?

Well I am a fairly new owner of aTGE Indie License. My interest is mostly RPGs, and am using TGE due to that it does have the potential to do what I would like to see.Building a RPG Start Kit with a generic system is a waste of time as most would simply drop the system. If you want something to munch on while they are (or are not) still tinkering away at the starter pack I would suggest this and the resources that follow it. Dreamer has put together some great stuff and his upcoming advanced MMO tutorials seem promising as well. Might as well work on something while you wait. Who knows what you might come up with.

I would so buy it. I am way too busy with other things then to try to figure out every little detail i need for an RPG. Dreamers tutorials are pretty interesting, but far from enough to get me "started"

Oh I would buy it in a second too...hint hint. If they have something to show for at IGC that would be awesome and would provide us with some sort of timeframe for when it will be released.

I believe Vince Gee has been working on an RPG in torque - not really as a starter pack, but I think he's releasing them to the public as resources, which I think is really cool. Also, Dreamer has written a helluva lot of articles and posted code on implementing RPG-type things...

Heh, maybe i should just make a rpg starter kit myself... sell that instead of trying to make a game :)

Although I am *really* taking advantage of the fact that I'm making an exclusively single-player game, so I've taken some shortcuts. It probably wouldn't be useful to many people.

Heh. Yeah, I wonder how much of my work could be thrown into a starter pack.Although I am *really* taking advantage of the fact that I'm making an exclusively single-player game, so I've taken some shortcuts. It probably wouldn't be useful to many people.

Anyone have any idea when this RPG pack will be coming out? I'm in the progress of starting an RPG game and now that this is mentioned I'd like to have it before I start all that programming. The art and sound departments are going strong, but I'd like to have the RPG pack before we actually put source to the engine.Jenno

Do not wait for the RPG pack. It is in the early design/planning stages.

Perhaps you can request these guys, if they have time, give kinda a previous synopsis of what they went through to use the RTS pack to jumpstart their RPG development.

Let me know on this thread who is interested in a 2d console-style RPG pack. I'm not talking about just some inventory systems either - I'm talking about the whole framework of a console style RPG with real time, pseudo-real time and turn based battle engines, node-based and free-roaming overworld maps and interactive character scenes - fully scriptable dialog system, scriptable animated magic system - everything. You would just have to write the game events in script, define the hard-coded data, and script the magic animations in the appropriate hooks. What's better is that I already have all of it implemented in Puzzle Gaiden, I'd just have to get it into pack form.
Maybe I'll even release it before Puzzle Gaiden if there's enough demand. What do you guys think?
