Talking too difficult with keyboard

I often want to talk with teammates. I rarely do. Why? Because I lost control of my ship while I type.
In some other games, I type slowly, one letter at a time in between maneuvers. Eventually I get the message finished and I press enter. This doesn't work in ZAP because half of the ships controls overlap with the same letters you use for chatting.
There are 4 main controls that overlap with chatting: a, w, s, d, and [space]. I'm willing to give up one of my modules while chatting (space), but I need the others. Could you make the arrow keys serve the same function as a, w, s, and d? I suspect those are the first buttons that new players try also (at least those that don't read).

I've had limited success with the voice chat. there is a way to mute it right? like say if i was on 56k or something.

How do you voice chat? I know it says record voicechat or something like that for the "R" key but how do you actualy say it???

You talk into your microphone (assuming you have one)

Yes I have an internal mic in my computer but when you let go of "r"does it just send the sound?

The computer encodes and streams the voice chat as you say it, with about a one second lag total. It does require lots of bandwidth on the server... on the order of 5k per client, where normal gameplay requires under 2k per client. This might be the source of occasional insane lag. For example, my server at home (not running right now) would lag if anyone tried to talk.

You can tell you're talking because it shows some status info in the top left of the screen.

If you type too slowly, why not use voice chat.
