GID 9 Announced, GID 8 Entries Up, Theme Wanted
by Tom Bampton · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 01/03/2005 (5:53 am) · 20 replies
The entries page for the GID website has finally been updated with entries for GID8. Sorry about the delay, with being ill and christmas happening I completely forgot about it.
GID9, the first GID of 2005, will be on Jan 22nd/23rd ... but we need a theme! Anyone got any suggestions ?

How about using the theme text. That gives you a massive reign, you could have a game where you were a certain letter or the entire game could be text based.

Has a theme for this been announced? I have an idea I might work with, depending on if I can work the theme into it or not :)

Would be good to take a vote on it and decide the theme, I just realised it's only a couple of days to the GID. Not having a computer has really made me lose track of everything :/
My thoughts ...
Jungle could be interesting and is wide ranging enough. Same for Rome in a Day.
Text is a nice challenge but could be a bit restrictive for a theme.
Elasticity seems too physics intensive, which could restrict options for quite a few people who dont have a physics/maths background.
Of Melv's; altered reality, oversized stuff, find and seek, climbing/ascending and domination seem to give a lot of interesting possibilities.
If we ever did use Falling as a theme (we were going to, but I forget if we actually did or not) then Climbing/Ascending would be a good complement. Perhaps in the future we could try two opposite themes back to back, could lead to some interesting variations.
Lets distill it down to a choice between Find and Seek, Altered Reality, and Rome in a Day.
Feel free to vote for something other then those 3 if you don't agree with me, we'll just go with whatever gets the most votes. Let me know either here or on IRC and I'll tally them up tommorow.

Hmm... all cool ideas. Im particularly partial to the text one, but maybe that's just cus it fits in with my bbs based game idea ;-)Would be good to take a vote on it and decide the theme, I just realised it's only a couple of days to the GID. What e-mail address should I use? The fos2k4 one?
Tom, do you have summary stats on how many entries, participants, etc.?

So, I had completely forgotten to send a summary to Tom.What e-mail address should I use? The fos2k4 one?
Tom, do you have summary stats on how many entries, participants, etc.?

Yep, thats the right email address. That reminds me I havent updated the site yet :) Will do that when I get your info.
Do you want summary stats for over the entire GID or just the last GID ? It would be kind of interesting to do that, actually. You can glean some info from http://www.gameinaday.com/entries.shtml ... it might be better if I modify the perl script that generates those pages to generate stats that I can import to a spreadsheet and mess with.

OK, my entry is sent.
I was thinking the last GID, but overall stats would be interesting, too. I'm just wondering, in the end, how many people contributed to GID 9. Must have been at least 4, judging from .plan posts and conversations in the irc channel...

From entries received it was 6 for GID9. There may be one or two others who didnt send in their entries, but I lost count due to shock at people remembering to send in entries without having to be prompted. That's actually a first :)T.
