Seeking 2D Artist for 2D RTS
by Ben Versaw · in Jobs · 12/24/2004 (4:44 pm) · 6 replies
I am looking for a 2D Artist to help with the 2D RTS (Real Time Strategy) Game I am creating. I cannot pay you and I won't make promises of getting the game published (though I intend to try). IF we make any money on this game it will be split fairly. I will take artists of any skill levels so think of it as a learning project.
The game itself is based in the future and is in outer space. The artwork required would be sprites of combat ships, planets, explosions, weapon fire, interface panels, and other interface art work. The first draft of the design document is completed and if your interested in working with me you can contact me to see it.
In your interested you can post here or email me at programs@charter.net . You can also contact me on MSN via wizrealms@yahoo.com

As to the game being desirable to publish. To a major publisher I'm sure a 2d game will be shot down but so would any 3D game I could create. I'm not aiming for creating the next best selling game I'm aiming to create a fun 2D RTS that might be published by a company such as GarageGames.
I'm very aware of what is common for new people to do. I simply stated that I will be attempting to get a publisher (and also stated the fact the chance is slim) because when you can't pay someone you have to offer something.
The reason I do not have a website for the game is that the game is in early development any info I put up would be changing very rapidly. I will be adding my resume to my profile shortly. I forgot about doing that.
As stated before I'm curious what gives you the impression that I am incapable of creating this game.

I do not have a degree but I have many other successful game projects. None that have made money though and I am sure this will not either. I have started small and worked up for over five years until starting this project and I would offer the exact same advice you are to anyone else. I'm not sure what is making you think I won't be able of doing this, if you would like to point it out to me I'll clear it up for you.As to the game being desirable to publish. No information about you was included, nor about the game, other than a very short paragraph which essentialy only tells the artist that it's Star Wars.
Please note, however, that I did not say you were incapable. I suggested that you start smaller. I also gave you tips and tricks I learned from various communities. I did all of this because I have seen WAY too many projects fail before and it would be nice to play a beta or final release of this game. Because of no resume, website, forum, or information, I was under the impresion that you had very little experience in this industry.
I would also suggest putting a website up, even if it just says "Coming Soon" because, still, it shows people dedication. A forum is the first thing you need, though, and is vital to creating a game this complicated. The sooner you get those up, the bigger of a response you'll get from this thread.

I'm working on getting a proper web host and web domain. I have also put my resume in my profile. My current web host doesn't support forums of any sort so I have wait until I get a new web host.

Those unexperienced will be split between wanting to jump in now, and wanting to join later. However, those who have worked on or are working on a succesful project now will tell you 'no way'.
I've learned that in order to get anything done (and to stay organized), you really need a forum. I'd suggest using PHP forums (which are affordable) and dreamweaver MX 2004 from Macromedia.
After looking at your profile, I'm curious to see what kind of work you can pull off. It lists that you are an advanced programmer and a skilled web developer. Why don't you post some samples, here, to see if you really can do it. No resume was included in your profile, which, when you want to lead a team, is an ideal place to put it. Why don't you have a website for the game?
If you have no relative Bachelor's degree, and no previous successful projects, I'd suggest trying to practice the thing that you most want to excel at, and then apply for a job elsewhere. If you wish to be a director, get a B.S. degree and apply for a job somewhere else so that you can see how everything should be run.
I'm worried that the game will not be desirable enough to publish, because 2D RTS games are a thing of the past. I agree that 2d sometimes works better than 3d (and it often does), but the game players tend to disagree. Overall, 3d games sell much better than 2d.
If you read my posts in the past, you would know by now that I think that everyone should start small. Don't run into this industry thinking that making games is easy. Otherwise, everyone would do it... It takes dedication beyond belief, luck, and a lot of skill and persistance. I would suggest making some smaller games, alone or with a partner at first, and learning a little bit of law, finance, and 3d (or at least the terminology) before you even consider leading a team.
Just as an FYI, only people new to the industry or very seasoned professionals place plans of publishing on their job listings. Always try to maintain a professional appearance, and try to accumulate as much on your resume as possible before you place job offers here.
If you are throwing a new idea into the ring, make sure that you have a website to host it on. (as in a pay/year website, nothing free) It will convince people that you are serious about your company/project.
