Linux-based Gaming Console?

Hello!

I had this idea, and some associates think it might be a good one, but I'd like to see what fellow developers thought of it.

How would you like to develop for a Linux-based gaming console? I've never been too much of a console gamer, really just a PC gamer, but Windows isn't my "weapon of choice" per se. I like Linux much, much more... but the best games are never developed for it. It gets no respect at all. Well, that's not completely true, but it certainly could get more.

So how about making a fully functional Linux computer based on Mini-ITX or Mirco-BTX/Pico-BTX tech that happens to be tweaked towards fast boot times and gaming performance. We would probably tweak a distro a bit for our needs, but think about how cool that would be! First of all, it would encourage game development for Linux. Second, it's a cheap computer, AND a game console. Easily moddable and upgradable, and you can even build your own if we release the distro!

So, the question is: would you guys think that's a good idea? Would it make you port your games to Linux?

Thanks!

Hmmm.. well I don't think it has been released yet what the Phantom Console is running; however, I believe that the PS2 developement platform is linux.

I don't have Torque, but I thought one of its major perks was that it is fully cross platform, so it seems to encourage porting already.

Hardware is for the big boys. But there is nothing wrong with developing an engine for linux, but it looks like Torque already does that.

Engines are consoles, and that is were alot of gaming is probably headed. Half-life , Half-life 2, Torque and any other engine out there ARE virtual consoles

Wal-mart is selling a notebook computer for $498 with Linux: News Article

Some of these Wal-mart news articles really piss me off. I saw one on CNN about Wal-mart slashing already low prices... that's a friggin' advertisement.

Anyway, what IS cool is that this is Linux, aimed at consumers, and that the computer comes with the Mozilla Internet Suite... of which, I have become a HUGE fan.

Start putting together those Linux bundle deals... these boxes need games!!!!

Hrmm ... I wonder how one of these PS2 or XBox's running Linux would go running Torque under Linux ... probably not that well due to the limited ram.
