Mirrors used as relfective water?

by arteria3d · in Torque Game Engine · 12/20/2004 (4:03 pm) · 26 replies

I notice in the TGE demo - that there is a mirror on the wall. Can we scale these and use them for reflective water?

Stevie: Yes - There's some problem when it's scaled too big. Load it into Quark, and make it huge (and cover the other sides with null textures while you're at it) I made mine 2048x2048 on the X/Y plane.

Ashley: The performance hit is around 40%. It is actually rendering everything twice. There are quite a few things that can be done to make this better (during reflection rendering), from caching vertex buffers for reuse, lowering the back clip plane (and fog) so it doesn't go as far, etc. Rendering the scene to a small texture, and stretching it over the water area with the use of stencils, I may look into these things if I decide I want to keep the reflections.

Jmac, no matter how big i am scaling the mirror in quark, it still shows up small in torque!! and when i then try to scale it, it does go slightly bigger,
but then goes haywire again. COuld u kindly sent me the mirror u made, to see why mine isnt working properly.

Thanks

Wow - why has this never been added to TGE as actual reflective water?

Shown here is a picture of my level with the reflective water in place. The difference it makes actually blew me away!!!!
As Jmac said, probs due to terrain occulation or something, the image does disapear at times... and as i dont know C
i dont know how this would be changed.

Performance wise, when at the shore on the pic, looking out at sea, my FPS is 35. When looking towards the busy part of my scene
with the reflective water in place, fps does drop to 16.... but my FPS at that part was only 22 anyway - as i needed to do some further LOD's on my objects so that doesnt concern me too much at this stage.

Cheers

I haven't looked into it yet. I would think it should be ralatively simple to find, so perhaps I can get a chance soon.
