Understanding...but still.....

by Dark Ferret · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 11/16/2001 (7:56 am) · 10 replies

I understand that this year, and the next year, and most likely the year after that will be totally covered over by MMORPG's. This is kind of a downside to me, a few years back i wanted to create one, so i started (im a 3d artist btw) and i got a nice team together, then it just stopped, it was my failure, due to leadership and communication faults in myself.

So i tried again, new game plan, and we started going, then my team overtook and i got kicked off, and well..the game failed anyhow, but still, another failure on my part...

But now, im kinda etchy, i want to make this rpg, but i dont want to fail, what you guys think i should do?

Its Midevil Fantasy , but unlike others, instead of 'rolling' to hit the target, you use the num pad to create real time combat, blocking with your shield, slashing, bashing ,etc. but stats will still be roll based....

*Yawn*...sorry...how so?

>>instead of 'rolling' to hit the target, you use the num pad to create real time combat, blocking with your shield, slashing, bashing ,etc. but stats will still be roll based....

Sounds a bit like 'Die by the Sword'...thats cool and all...but what about the REST of the game?

I'm sorry to seem to pick on you...but the marketplace for a mideveil fantasy MMORPG is satuated...It seems there is a new one each week (almost each day)...

Given the description of useing the numberkeypad for swinging a sword...the game sounds like it would develop along "micro-management" lines...only a small, SMALL segment of game players actually enjoy such activities as organizeing the contents of thier charactor's backpack, etc...

my Online RPG failed casue we have such awsome ideas (we really do) but of course noone's doing crap except for me and a moderler nad i cna't do all the scripting by myself...... and i'm really pissed off. They keep saying "I'll look at it tonight" but end up playing daoc or eq or some stupid thing. One of my teammates blasted me when i asked what the hell is so good about EQ (i did play it and got bored) and he was just like, "Look what do you do all day," "work on making games" "Wow that's sooooo much better".... *sigh*

this has relaly brought me down lately. It's really hard to do a game by myself, even tho it isn't for commercial.... anyway i'm done with my rants..

Just do what you can inch by inch. A game developers life is like no other, freedom to create and express. I would say dont worry about failing, just do it.

Be like me :) Just stop playing games and you'll have more free time. You'll also avoid being influenced by latest games you play and avoid wanting to make the latest hit game you played. Last game I played was Mr.Driller, a funny game I played just to relax. Now I don't play games at all, I've got no single game (except for ones I am working on) on my HD. I've made a promisse not to play anything for a while. I am gameoholic, if I start playing I am never gonna get anything done, it's that simple :)

So don't give up, work on your skills, find people that are dedicated and hard working and work with those people.

Ouch!...I'm very, VERY sorry if I came across as a jerk...Please belive me, it wasn't intended

I was trying to point out that sometimes "a break" is needed...to step back and try something else for a while, or get anothers opinion.

Most folks who want to develop a RPG (even a MMORPG) seem to be hardcore fans of that game genre...thats quite good and all but it usually meens they are more "fans of the game genre" then "game developers"...to put it bluntly...to be a game developer you really must love to develop games...love the whole creative process...unfortunetly most "fans of a game genre" would rather play a game then develop one.

Going back to my original point...perhaps "a change of pace" is needed...either in how you approch potential development partners (It can be VERY difficult to tell the "game players" from "potential developers" interested in helping given such a narrow field as mideveil fantasy basied RPGs)...or try to develop a game in another genre that you arn't exactly interested in (but design such a game along lines that would intrest you)...Doing this may seem sorta like a jazz musician trying to play heavy metal music, but the results are almost always more interesting (and generateing intrest, potential development partners, etc.) then what musicians would do (or could do) within thier defined genre.

Ok, ok...seems this has gotten a little out of hand, let me explain my idea....

(View this from a 3rd Person View)
You arrive in an open field of plains, you have chosen the dwarven race to be brother too, and now you must hold up your vows.

Selecting one of your men, send him over and have him create a smith. Now yoou have weapons to be made, start working, you send two more of your men over to become warriors, due to you just starting, your research is low, and they will have to use crude axes and clubs. That wont due, you get your smith on researching a better axe.

While he is doing this you send another man over to create a house, so you can 'get' more men.

This is only a small portion, and there is tons more, let me skip over to combat.---->

You walk out on the field, you can see the Humans on the other side of the tree-line...10 of them, and there is only 4 of you, fight well, or lose all...you rally up your men, giving orders like "left flank, move up with me" and "follow me".

Your men do as there told and when you enter combat, you open up with a right slash (which would be num6) and hit the mans shield, he comes back quickly with a slash from his short sword, due to not having a shield you cant block as easy and get hit on the arm, but slashing lightly.

Sow what do you think? (this is small version, also..i need a webmaster)
