I'm guessing you got your performance issues worked out with the new video card Stevie?

Hi mate,

Stephen - something very interestin has happened... and i should have noted this...

The other day before the problems i took Service Pack 2 off..... then the performance started to shatter...... Before i put service pack 2 back on, installed the new card - and hey presto - i am getting much better results.

okay, performance at areas of around 60-70 polys on the scene, are slowing down to 17fps, but areas displaying 40k worth of polys are now running at aroun 27 - and the whole scene is much more smoother.

Just to test the scene, i have placed aroun 30 extra trees from the Tim Aste Pack which are moderately high poly for a tree - and the scene is running much smoother even with the additions.

I believe now, that if i make the last stage of LOD for all trees to be billboards, then my idea of a mass foilaged island could be possible.

Why the heck.. should service pack 2 have had this detremental effect?

That's a really good question about SP2--but I'm a bit confused. Are you seeing better results with SP2 put back in plus the new card, or just the new card (without SP2), or?

And yes, the billboard is probably pretty key. Wish I knew more about this type of implementation, since we need some pretty huge forests ourselves!

Can't wait for Ben G's forest pack, hope he gets some time to work on it soon!

Okay - initially when i still had the 5700 - i took service pack 2 off on Tuesday, cos one of my apps never worked with it properly - thats when i noticed the huge performance running issue with torque... All through our conversations i did wonder whether it was anything to do with unstill of the service pack - but though.... it couldnt be.

Anyway got the new graphic card installed, and still the low performance. Out of interest i then loaded the service pack back on - and hey..... performance increased totally. Even though in parts the frame rate was dropping - cos loads of stuff was in camera view, there was no horrible sluggishness as such - and no bad jerking. Frame rate had definatally increased by 15+ too - more in parts.

So the Service pack was definatally responsible for some performance increase. Just thought though Stephen...... as i had just fresh installed windows - i hadnt downloaded any updates for windows - so bare in mind, that it maybe isnt cos of new content in service pack 2 - as such, but may have been from any previous service pack or update - cos obviously service pack 2 contains everything up to date update wise for windows. Something in there definatally improved performance. So everybody get your windows completely up to date!

Also funny how the 9800 SE is a cheaper card than the 5700oc - but it saws on performance better than it. I believe actually that i can soft mod this card too, to become a 9800 pro - anyone know where to get the softmode driber from??
