EA + NFL = Monopoly

by Michael Cozzolino · in General Discussion · 12/14/2004 (8:25 am) · 73 replies

Well obviously EA wants to control the NFL game market and keep Sega from taking over their dominance. EA set up a deal with the NFL for the next 5 years to have exclusive rights to the NFL trademark. This includes use of Teams, Logos, Stadiums, Etc. So no one else can create a NFL Licensed game.

I have dropped EA long ago. Since Madden 94 and I have now gone to Sega ESPN Football for $19.99 and I think a much better game as do many. It looks like I'll be playing ESPN 2005 atleast until 2011.

So EA is continuing to look bad with their business practices. I will never buy an EA product again. F.U. EA. Try competing with product, not BS.

What do you guys think about this?

I don't exactly agree with the practice, but I wouldn't go so far as to say Madden 2005 is "inferior product." I'd still say it's a better game overall than ESPN. But the death of competition is a bad thing.

I think you are right on. I personally like the ESPN better for other reasons, so that wasn't even an issue for the most part. But I personally detest EA for not only their business ethics and practices, but the way they treat their customers as well. They are completely unwilling to honor a warrenty on a bad product without the customer having to jump through hoops or threaten lawsuits. They have turned into gamings worst nightmare. I encourage EVERYONE to think twice about buying that next EA release they have their eye's on. Why not wait till the inventory overload knocks the price down to say 9.99 instead of 49.99? Think about it, for every one of us that refuses to buy it when it comes out, there will be one extra disc sitting on a shelf making someone nervous about sales. Fight back in the stores, it's easy, just don't buy it. If you lack the control you need and have to play it now now now, go rent the damn thing. Give your money to BlockBuster, they already bought it.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, this deal has another backfire for someone else. For the next 5 years I will also NOT purchase anything that is licensed by the NFL. No coffee mugs, T-shirts, Jackets, Hats, NFL ticket, nothing. Best way to show other companies that inking a deal with EA is not a good idea is to not buy their products either. Something else to think about.

Who cares football sucks anyway, as long as I get new / updated versions of MotoGP and Gran Turismo I will be happy.

Quote:In its 15-year history, EA said the Madden NFL series has sold more than 42 million copies. This year's version has sold about 2.7 million units through November, compared with about 2.1 million of the ESPN-branded game, according to market researcher the NPD Group in Port Washington.

From Dubious Quality: "So last year it was a 10-1 margin in Madden's favor, and this year it's 7-5? That might be the biggest one-year market share grab in gaming history."

Ahhhh... It's a profit deal!!!!

Well said Jarrod! All I need is GT and GTA and I'm set.

I thought I saw a product called NFL Streets 2005 coming out soon ... guess that was before the deal ?

Just like ol' jerkrod to chime in with nothing worth saying. Be sure and let us know anytime a product you are connected with comes out Jarrod, I want to be sure and not buy it either.

(Note to self, do not purchase Halcyon if it ever turns into a real product - After all, who cares?)

Well even though Gonzo was harsh it was deserved.

Obviously people care or this thread wouldn't have been created, and EA wouldn't have sold a zillion copies of the game.

Hardly the first time Jarrod has come in with his, "my opinion is the only one that counts" attitude.

Mike Stoddart > What game was that? I enjoyed Jonah Lomu rugby on the Playstation one, but its sequel was lacking.

I don't care that EA controls most of the market...

As long as I keep getting new games like Burnout 3, Goldeneye, and GT, I am very happy.

The games are great so why pick a fight about it? [/flamewar]

Because Im a huge ESPN football fan since NFL 2k on Dreamcast. And their product, ESPN 2k5 killed EA's Madden in every magazine review out there. They paniced and saw their 10-15 year dominance in the football genre slipping out of their fingers. I'm officially done with football games for the next 5 years. EA and the NFL have officially taken away my right to choose and that's evil any way you look at it.

So, I'm guessing you only play consoles ... being that ESPN NFL 2k5 was only for consoles and not for the PC.

George, that new Goldeneye was crap =) A perfect example of EA's attitude. They're working quite well at undermining the competition, especially with the recent hostile stake in Ubisoft.

@Sikosis: Yeah I play PC games. I prefer console games a little more though, just because I grew up on them. But the EA NFL contract includes PC games too doesn't it? LOL EA couldn't compete so they went crying to mommy like a spoiled little brat that can't get things to go their way anymore.

Yes... Instead of competing with Sega/others by actually trying to make a better game, they legally took Sega and everyone else completely from the market...how low

Quote:Yes, but with games like...

Need For Speed
Battlefield
Command & Conquer
Medal of Honor
The Sims
Black&White
Sim City
Dungeon Keeper
Ultima
Lord of the Rings
FIFA, NBA, NHL, NFL

Sadly, many "great EA games" are not EA, but by smaller companies they bought to gain more $$$, 'The Sims' by Maxis, Black&White/Dungeon Keeper by Bullfrog (which is now basically the independent Lionhead Studios), etc...

@Ajari ... sorry wasn't really a complaint ... just I only play PC games not consoles and therefore, I've only played Madden. Maybe if the ESPN was for the PC as well, I might have come across it and thought the same.
